Commend Country for Stopping Ivory Trade

Commend Country for Stopping Ivory Trade

Target: Laurette Onkelinx, Deputy Prime Minister of Belgium

Goal: Thank Belgian government for its commitment to end the ivory trade

Belgium is a hotbed for the ivory trade. Since 1984, 14,000 items have been seized in the small country, totaling four-and-a-half tones of elephant tusks. Most of the confiscated ivory is intended for the Asian market, and in recent years the numbers of elephants killed has increased significantly. The Belgian government is set to destroy their entire stockpile of ivory, and it is through the efforts of the government and customs officers that so much work has been put in to stopping ivory coming through Belgium. Sign this petition to thank the Belgian government for their hard work and encourage them to continue protecting animals around the world.

Not only has Belgium shown commitment in stopping ivory at their own borders, customs officers have run many workshops in which they train officers from other countries, showing them how people hide and disguise ivory products. Programs like these, and Belgium’s involvement with CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora), illustrate how influential a small country with 11 million people can be.

Sign this petition to show your support for Belgium’s work to stop ivory trading, and encourage the Belgian government to continue its efforts in animal conservation.

Dear Ms. Onkelinx,

I must write in sincere thanks for your country’s commitment to fighting the horrific ivory trade. Your customs officers must be commended for their hard work in not only stopping the flow of ivory through Belgium into Asia, but running programs which train customs employees from other countries to identify attempted ivory smuggling.

Your commitment to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora is also commendable, and I hope you continue to protect animals and plants in future years.

The world could use a lesson from countries like Belgium. I hope the ceremony to destroy the 1.7 tons of ivory that customs officers have seized in the past few years reiterates the need to protect endangered species, and I look forward to seeing the results of your endeavors in years to come.
