Condemn Princess for Supporting Gassing Badgers

Target: Princess Anne

Goal: Condemn Princess Anne for supporting the gassing of badgers

With a badger cull recently avoided, Princess Anne made a statement to the BBC that has shocked and angered animal welfare groups. She believes that gassing badgers is the most humane way of controlling the spread of tuberculosis. Gassing has never been proven to be humane, whether it be used on humans or animals and the Princess should be condemned for her statements.

The population of badgers are a growing concern as they spread tuberculosis to cattle. The United Kingdom is trying desperately to find a humane way to control their numbers, and gassing has been proven to be both inhumane and ineffective. In the 70’s, the government gassed several badger sets, but it did nothing to control their numbers. Since badgers built their homes to keep warm air in and the cold out, it was difficult to deliver a lethal dose into the sets. The practice was later banned in 1982.

Shooting the badgers would also prove to be ineffective as previous studies have shown. Currently the United Kingdom is pursuing vaccinations as a way to curb the spread of TB to cattle. Animal welfare groups and wildlife lovers see this avenue as a promising one, and many are trying to inform Princess Anne of other options.

The general public is appalled that the princess would make such a simplistic and uninformed statement about badgers. Princess Anne also made a statement about farming horses for their meat, once again prompting outcry as the princess has a passion for horse riding.

Sign this petition and condemn Princess Anne’s statements on animal welfare. Humans and animals should learn to coexist together. Animals are not replaceable, they are necessary for our planet’s survival and deserve to live.

Dear Princess Anne,

I am writing to tell you how appalled and disappointed I am with your recent statement on badgers. Recently a badger cull was called off because of its ineffectiveness and inhumane treatment of the animals. Yet, you support the gassing of these animals even though previous studies have shown that this method is also ineffective and inhumane.

Gassing of any living being is a cruel method and our animals shouldn’t be made to suffer. I implore you to look at other avenues for dealing with the badger problem, instead of this barbaric technique. All of our animals have a right to live, and if they prove to be a problem for humans, we should handle the problem humanely and with empathy.

  3. Margaret Morton says:

She is not popular…even less so now

  4. We have our name in common, other than that, I am glad we are worlds apart – the privledged need to remember that animals belong to God, and to keep their useless, cold-blooded opinions to themselves.

  5. Monika Koestler says:

Princess Anne was never really known for her intelligence – more for her “seat”, but now she’s starting to be a real pain.

  6. Jane Morrow says:

The older royals aren’t known for their compassion towards animals – fox hunting, pheasant shooting, the Queen shooting tigers back in the 60’s. At least William puts his name behind animal charities (like Tusk) and Charles is a bit of a greenie. I thought Anne would have more respect for horses – she looks like she’s related to one.

    • Oh Jane you really got me laughing with your comment I too thought that Ann was not only a horsey person but looked like on herself. Silly woman & her insensitive comment.

  7. John Lettieri says:

Princess Ann should keep her mouth shut and leave the badgers alone.

  8. Daniela Bress says:

Hm, money couldn’t be the problem regarding her education – so what shall we think about the obvious lack of it?
