Stop the Violence in Syria

Syrian Child refugee

Target: President Bashar al-Assad

Goal: Stop the violence in Syria

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, at least 150,000 people have been killed in the three year Syrian civil war. A third of those numbers are civilians, although the UK based observatory believes that the death toll could be as high as 220,000. While the United Nations is trying desperately to make peace between the government and opposition forces, talks have failed. You can help end the conflict by adding your voice, and pressuring the government. Stop the violence and stop the killing.

The Syrian conflict began in 2011 when pro-democracy protests erupted and the government responded with violence. These protesters also wanted the current president to resign as his family had been in control of the government decades. But instead of listening to their citizens, security forces shot and killed many of these protesters. The ensuing violence quickly escalated into a civil war between pro-government and opposition forces, attracting international attention.

Used in the conflict were chemical weapons, bombings, snipers, and razing of homes. It resulted in thousands of refugees fleeing Syria to neighboring countries like Turkey and Jordan. Many of these refugees were women and children and while they have escaped the conflict in Syria, their struggles are just beginning. Female refugees face harassment and sexual assault, where some authorities threaten to deport them back to Syria or otherwise hurt them. Countries like Jordan and Turkey are struggling to provide for the refugees, and animosity between the nations keeps relationships tense.

President Assad has already angered many nations with the use of chemical weapons upon his citizens. The United Nations has demanded the president to resign and step down, thereby ending the conflict. With the president refusing, we can pressure him and opposition leaders to have talks so the violence will finally stop. You do so by signing this petition below.

Dear President Bashar al-Assad,

I am writing to demand an end to the civil war in your nation. For three years your people have fought against each other, killing soldiers and civilians alike. Surely this wasn’t what you – or your citizens – had in mind for a country. Humans want stability and freedom, not war. Therefore I ask that you and the opposition leaders  sit down and resume your talks.

It’s estimated that 150,000 people have died in this conflict. It would deeply sadden me to see that death toll continue to rise over the years. Your citizens have a right to a peaceful and stable country, so I ask on their behalf that you discuss your options with the opposition leaders and stop this violence.
