Investigate Murder of Activist

Target: Justice Naimuddin Ahmed, Ombudsman of Bangladesh

Goal: Investigate the suspicious disappearance and death of a labor activist in Bangladesh

Police in Bangladesh have failed to properly investigate the murder of Aminul Islam, a prominent labor activist. Islam’s body displayed signs of torture, and circumstances of the death suggested the involvement of Bangladesh security forces. Two years since Islam’s death, authorities have failed to make meaningful progress toward solving the suspicious murder.

Islam worked for the Center for Worker Solidarity, promoting labor rights in the garment and seafood sectors. After disappearing mysteriously, he was found dead with severe signs of torture on his body, including puncture wounds and broken toes. Statements made by witnesses of the disappearance suggest that Bangladeshi authorities could have been involved.

During Aminul Islam’s work in the garment and seafood industries, he encountered threats from business owners and public figures. He was under surveillance and faced harassment due to his work to raise labor wages in the country.

Currently, two years after Islam’s death, there has been no suspect apprehended for the crime. Though there has been a suspect named and the trial is pending, authorities have not been able to apprehend the accused murderer, a worker in the garment industry. There has also been no move to investigate the alleged involvement of public officials.

More shocking than the torture and murder of a prominent activist is the blatant lack of attention that the authorities have given to the case. Considering the suspicious nature of the disappearance, authorities should be making every effort to investigate the alleged involvement of public officials. Demand that Bangladesh properly investigate Aminul Islam’s murder.

Dear Justice Naimuddin Ahmed, Ombudsman of Bangladesh,

Two years ago, Aminul Islam, a prominent labor activist, disappeared abruptly. Two days later, he was found dead, with signs of torture on his body and witnesses alleging that Bangladeshi public officials were involved. To this day, no suspect has been apprehended for the murder- a suspect has been named, but no effort has been made to apprehend the accused murderer.

Bangladeshi authorities have made no tangible progress in solving this crime, nor any move to investigate allegations of the involvement of public officials. The suspicious nature of Islam’s disappearance and the possible involvement of Bangladeshi officials combined with the apparent lack of police interest are alarming. I demand that tangible progress be made into the investigation of Aminul Islam’s death.
