Target: Ayatollah Sayed ‘Ali Khamenei, Leader of the Islamic Republic
Goal: Halt the executions and ascertain the whereabouts of two men sentenced to death in Iran
Ali Chebieshat and Sayed Khaled Mousawi, two men on death row in Iran, have been secretly moved to an unknown location, prompting fears that their executions are imminent. Both men are currently appealing their sentences after giving forced confessions. Sign the petition and demand that Iran immediately disclose the whereabouts and guarantee the safety of Ali Chebieshat and Sayed Khaled Mousawi.
Chebieshat and Mousawi stand accused of “enmity against God” for their alleged roles in a conspiracy to blow up a natural gas pipeline. A third man allegedly involved in the explosion, which took place near Chebieshat and Mousawi’s home village, has been sentenced to twenty-five years in prison. Chebieshat and Mousawi were taken into custody without arrest warrants, were denied access to their families and lawyers for months, and were allegedly tortured into making false confessions. Their forced confessions were videotaped, and they were shown confessing to the explosion on Iranian state television, which Amnesty International points out is a “violation of international standards for fair trials.” Their families were also videotaped while being forced to watch footage of the men’s confessions.
The Supreme Court is still reviewing Chebieshat and Mousawi’s appeals, but the men’s sudden removal to an unknown location suggests that the Iranian government is preparing to go through with the executions anyway. Two other men, members of the same ethnic minority as Chebieshat and Mousawi, were executed in January 2014 after being removed to a secret location. The families were not informed of the deaths until well after the fact, and the bodies were not released.
Iran is in gross violation of both international human rights standards and its own laws. Sign the petition and demand justice for Ali Chebieshat and Sayed Khaled Mousawi.
The recent removal of Ali Chebieshat and Sayed Khaled Mousawi to a secret location has caused considerable worry for both their families and human rights activists worldwide. I urge you to immediately reveal the men’s whereabouts, guarantee their safety, and overturn their death sentences.
The rights of Ali Chebieshat and Sayed Khaled Mousawi have been violated from the first moment of their arrests, which were performed without a warrant. The men were denied access to both their relatives and legal representation for months, and were allegedly tortured into confessing. Their televised “confessions” violated international fair trial standards, and their allegations of torture merit an immediate and in-depth investigation.
Under international law, the death penalty is only acceptable for crimes that involve intentional killing. The crime of which Chebieshat and Mousawi are accused–blowing up a natural gas pipeline near their home village of Khuzestan–does not fit those parameters. Furthermore, their removal to a secret location is both ominous and incredibly premature, given that the Supreme Court is still reviewing their appeals.
Ali Chebieshat, Sayed Khaled Mousawi, and their families have already been subjected to more than their fair share of distress and injustice; do not subject them to even more. Disclose the men’s whereabouts, guarantee their safety, investigate the human rights violations they have reportedly suffered, bring those responsible for their ill-treatment to justice, and finally, overturn the death sentences of Ali Chebieshat and Sayed Khaled Mousawi.
