Protest Restrictions on Reproductive Rights

Target: Kansas Governor Sam Brownback

Goal: Condemn Kansas government for defunding Planned Parenthood

Reproductive rights for women have undergone serious and alarming restrictions in recent years, perhaps best exemplified by deplorable legislative action in Kansas that would defund Planned Parenthood. Furthermore, the Kansas legislature has introduced a bill that would require all health-care providers to report miscarriages regardless of how early they occur. Condemn the Kansas government for these actions.

Defunding Planned Parenthood would take away easy access to contraceptives and make it much harder for women to seek out less expensive reproductive care. The organization offers more than abortions and provides numerous invaluable services for low-income individuals, including contraception and safe haven for women who feel they have no other choice.

Removing the choice for abortions will not prevent them, and in fact may cause greater loss of life when women resort to desperate means. Lack of available contraception would increase unwanted pregnancies as well. Taking away Planned Parenthood’s funding is completely wrong-headed, and an unethical means to restrict reproductive rights and reduce a woman’s choices.

Kansas is also pushing a bill that would require doctors to report all miscarriages, even these that occur in early stages of birth. Such an act would further the idea of granting fetuses personhood, severely restricting access to abortions and potentially penalizing women who miscarry. There have already been incidences of women subjected to investigation for miscarrying or delivering stillborn babies. Miscarriages can occur in up to 20% of pregnancies, making this sort of bill absolutely unconscionable.

Women are still forced to fight to retain their reproductive rights, and it has proved an uphill battle in many states. The Kansas government cannot continue this course of action without condemnation. This legislation must be opposed, and it must not be allowed to continue. Protest these newly proposed restrictions on reproductive rights by signing the petition below.

Dear Governor Sam Brownback,

Women’s reproductive rights have been under increasing restriction on the statewide level, with numerous plans across the nation to reduce funding for Planned Parenthood. The Kansas government plans to reduce and eventually defund Planned Parenthood, which would severely limit or remove access to contraception and reproductive health medicine for thousands of people. Women who need or want abortions would also lose access, and may be forced to turn to desperate measures if they cannot afford to see a doctor.

Kansas is also pushing through a bill that would require that doctors report all miscarriages to the health department, opening the door to further abortion restrictions and potentially criminalizing women who have miscarriages, as has happened in other states.

This legislation is utterly reprehensible, and I demand that the Kansas government put a stop to these plans of action. Women should not have to fight tooth and nail for access to reproductive health services and contraception, and defunding Planned Parenthood will do much more harm than good.

Planned parenthood can still provide free abortions, just without a government budget. I am sure that just as other businesses, interest groups and non profits have to build from contributions, so can planned parenthood. You would back a special interest group you believe in wouldn’t you?
