Stop Harassment of Human Rights Worker

mexican drug war

Target: Genaro Garcia Luna, Head of Public Security in Mexico

Goal: To guarantee the safety of a human rights activist and her family in Northern Mexico

A woman in Northern Mexico has endured repeated threats from local police because of numerous complaints she has made against police relating to abuse of power, corruption and ill-treatment. The government of Sonora state, where she resides, must do all that it can to investigate these complaints and protect Ms. Martinez from further abuse. Much of the abuse she has received is due to a protest she organized after a young person was beaten so severely in police custody that he had to be placed in the hospital. The police involved in the beating warned Ms. Martinez that they would hand her over to the police and military, presumably to be beaten or intimidated in other ways. The local police commander also found time to threaten Ms. Martinez when he indicated he would, “get her out of the way with a beating” if she showed up at the protest. The government must look into these allegations and take swift action to remove those in power who are intimidating peaceful protesters.

Martha Solórzano Martínez’s son, Jorge Luis Zavala, was imprisoned on charges related to a violent incident. His family vehemently denies the charges, implying that he was arrested and convicted because of his mother’s activism. Mr. Zavala stated that, upon his detention, policemen told him that they knew who he was and that they were going to go after his mother next. He remains imprisoned and was recently transferred to a prison much further away from his family. Martha Solórzano Martínez’s has been informed that her son’s life is in danger at this prison due to her activism.

The suffering of Ms. Martinez and her family is due to the laissez-faire nature of the government. It is up to the head of the police and other powers to ensure the safety of peaceful protesters in Mexico. Those that are fighting for positive change should not be forced to live in fear of the people meant to protect them. Sign this petition and demand answers from the Mexican government as to why Martha Solórzano Martinez and her family have been treated this way.

Dear Secretary Genaro Garcia Luna,

The story of Martha Solórzano Martínez and her family is a tragedy. Simply because she is an advocate for change in your country, Ms. Martinez has faced numerous threats against her life from the police. In addition, her son has been imprisoned due to her activism and also faces great danger from his jailors. I ask that you do everything in your power to ensure the safety of Ms. Martinez and her son, Jorge Luis Zavala.

Ensuring their safety ensures the human rights of all the citizens of Mexico. It would also send a signal to the international community that your government is serious when it comes to improving your human rights record. I ask that you immediately take action to address these issues.
