Commend Action to Protect Students from Debt

Target: President Barack Obama

Goal: Thank President Barack Obama for attempting to protect students from the impending debt that for-profit universities provide

The Obama Administration is cracking down on unfair student debt by mandating that for-profit colleges meet new regulations or be closed. These new efforts are in attempts to stop the unfair college practices that leave students with high debt and no job. As higher education and student debt are a midst a crisis, these efforts are very positive and President Barack Obama should be commended for these regulations.

These regulations will affect around 8,000 higher education programs that are considered poor performing, including some community and state colleges, vocational programs, and programs that offer degrees in areas that degrees are typically not required in. Many of these for-profit programs that are typically found in television or internet advertisements, have the sole intent of making a profit and leave their students with high amounts of debt.

Before the new regulation was even announced, the for-profit college industry promised to fight against it. This behavior shows that this industry does not even care about the education that they provide. Colleges that seek to benefit students should be happy to adhere to regulations that would ensure that their students are getting a proper education that is setting them up for success after graduation. If this regulation works as planned, any of these colleges and programs that do not seek to set their students up for success will be dismantled.

During a time where student loan debt is higher than ever, as well as higher than any other type of debt in the United States, efforts that fight this debt are crucial to the success of current and future generations.

Please sign the petition below to thank President Barack Obama for helping to ensure this success:

Dear President Barack Obama,

Thank you for creating the recent regulations that will help prevent for-profit universities from leaving students with high debt and no jobs. The higher education system is currently in a crisis, and in need of a significant reform. These new regulations are a very positive start to this imperative reform.

It can be suggested that these regulations are already working based on the reaction from the for-profit college industry. The fact that the industry promised to fight against the regulations before they were even announced reveals that the industry in fact does not care about it’s students quality of education. Universities that seek to provide a beneficial education would willingly accept any regulations that would ensure students success after graduation.

On behalf of all current and future college students, thank you for these beneficial actions that will stop for-profit institutions from setting their students up for failure. We encourage you to continue making positive reforms for the higher education system.
