End Seal Slaughter With Federal Buyout

Target: Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper

Goal: End the Canadian seal slaughter with a federal buyout

Decades after animal rights activists have fought against the Canadian seal hunt, the horrific practice is still ongoing. In 2014, multiple animal welfare organizations are again pushing the Canadian government to end the slaughter with a federal buyout that would pay hunters to turn in their licenses instead of hunting seals. Urge Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper to support the buyout and end the slaughter immediately.

Every year, the Canadian government allows 300,000 harp seals to be killed during the months of March and April. So far, few attempts to regulate this hunt have been successful, and this unsustainable practice continues every year. Canadian seal hunters make less than 5 percent of their profit from the hunt and waste approximately 80 percent of the seal carcasses, yet continue to argue that the commercial hunt is necessary and beneficial. Sadly, the government spends more money supporting the hunters than it would to compensate them for turning in their hunting licenses.

In addition to being unnecessary, the hunt is harmful for seal populations and their delicate environment. Because the majority of seals are killed between the age of 12 days to 3 months, the overall population is declining. In 2007, a government study showed a 100 percent mortality rate for seals born that year. The hunt has also caused a 6 percent decrease in ice coverage since the late 1970s.

Most distressing is the brutality of the hunt, where seals are repeatedly bashed over the head with a sharp hakapik and are often skinned alive.

It is not too late to convince the Canadian government to shut down the seal slaughter in favor of a federal buyout that would end this destructive hunt. Because hunters do not obtain significant profit from the hunt, it would be most beneficial for them to turn in their licenses for financial compensation instead. This way, seals would be left in peace and hunters would have no reason to complain. It could be that 2014 is the year the seal slaughter ends.

Dear Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper,

For many years, animal activists around the world have urged Canada to stop its annual seal hunt that results in the violent destruction of 300,000 harp seals. This fast-paced slaughter is harming seal populations and their environment, and multiple studies have shown the hunt to be unsustainable.

This is the year to end the seal hunt. Your government spends more money supporting the seal industry than it would to compensate seal hunters for turning in their hunting licenses, which would save money in the future and allow for humane alternatives. It makes no sense to support cruelty at the expense of Canada’s economy and reputation and the millions of seals that endure needless suffering at the hands of your hunters. Please end this slaughter with a federal sealing industry buyout.
