Target: UN Secretary-General Ban-ki Moon
Goal: Allow for international aid to flow into Syria through opposition controlled border crossings
The Syrian government continues to block international aid access through its border crossings. This undermines the ability to get badly needed aid to hundreds of thousands of suffering people. The Syrian government’s refusal also violates the international laws of war. The UN Security Council recently demanded that Syrian authorities allow humanitarian access for UN humanitarian agencies and their partners. Urge the UN to stop at nothing in providing aid to Syria.
Up until now, the only entrance that the Syrian government has allowed to be used for international assistance delivery is one that is controlled by the government in the north on the border with Turkey. The other crossings on the border with Turkey and Jordan are at a standstill, subjecting Syrian civilians to crippling food shortages. There are fears that the government will not distribute aid to areas that are largely under opposition control.
The international community should impose punitive measures against the Syrian government for its failure to comply with the Security Council’s demand. These sanctions should include an arms embargo on the government. Forcing civilians to wait for basic humanitarian assistance is a gross violation of human rights. The Syrian government must be forced to cooperate with UN orders or the UN and its partners should ignore Syria’s wishes and begin to flood the country with goods regardless of border control. Sign this petition and demand an end to the blockade against aid in Syria.
Dear Secretary-General Ban-ki Moon,
The refusal of the Syrian government to allow aid into the country through border crossings controlled by opposition fighters is causing great distress among the civilian population. The United Nations must do all it can to provide aid to those in need. If this means ignoring the wishes of the Syrian government, then so be it. There are people suffering under the government and must be helped in order to survive.
I ask that you do all in your power to bring a better life to Syrians who are trapped in an endless cycle of violence. Doing so will provide the people in Syria the strength to continue and perhaps flee the country. If Syria protests or forcibly halts attempts to reach all Syrians, regardless of affiliation, then the international community must act quickly and harshly against the regime.
