Target: Nike C.E.O, Mark Parker
Goal: Boycott Nike for using kangaroo skin in their sneakers until the company promises to use only animal friendly products.
The popular athletic apparel company Nike is currently under fire after the revelation that the company uses kangaroo skin to make many of their sneakers. The use of animal skin is cruel to the animals, but also cruel to the unknowing consumers who are providing money to this harmful industry. Nike should be boycotted by animal supporters until the company agrees to use only animal friendly products.
Several of Nike’s popular sneakers, including their Premier Men’s Soccer Cleat, are made using kangaroo andor goat skin. The brand claims that the leather gives the shoes high traction, which allows athletes to accelerate quickly and make quick cuts. Kangaroo leather is in high demand with about $33 million worth exported from Australia each year. The methods in which this skin is obtained however are extremely cruel and involve killing both pregnant mothers and babies in disturbing manners.
Whether or not the leather provides traction benefits, companies including Nike should be seeking other materials that are less cruelly obtained yet have the same traction effects. Kangaroos are beautiful and innocent creatures and should not be slaughtered for the use of human clothing.
Please sign the petition below to boycott Nike until they agree to use only animal-friendly materials.
Dear Mark Parker,
The recent revelation that your company uses kangaroo and other animal skins in your sneakers has upset many animal activists and we are writing to suggest that you reform your sneaker production procedures before your company is permanently boycotted by many.
The leather used may provide traction that is beneficial to athletes; however, there are a plethora of available materials that are animal friendly and provide these same benefits. The importance of this issue lies in the cruel way in which kangaroo skin is obtained. Kangaroos are slaughtered by very disturbing methods and pregnant females and babies are not excluded in this slaughter. It is cruel and unjust that any species should have to undergo this sort of slaughter, especially for something as unimportant as human athletic clothing.
We ask that you stand with us on this issue and cease your use of kangaroo skin for the sake of the beautiful and innocent wild creatures.
