Target: President Uhuru Kenyatta
Goal: Veto bill that legalizes polygamy in Kenya without wife’s consent
Female politicians in Kenya stormed out of parliament when male politicians pushed for a bill that would not only legalize polygamy, but would allow men to marry as many women as they want, without the wife’s consent. The bill is facing severe backlash from female politicians, and the bill is now awaiting passage before it can be signed by the president. This egregious bill should not be made into law.
This bill comes as a heavy blow for equality for women in Kenya. The original proposal of the bill allowed women to veto her husband’s decision to marry another wife, but male politicians pushed for a revision. The current bill does not include this clause, allowing men to marry as many wives as they want without consent.
“When you marry an African woman, she must known there is a second one on the way, and a third wife… this is Africa,” said Junet Mohammad to the house. No doubt this statement is sparking outrage, as women should have the right to voice their opinions in a marriage.
Polygamy is a common practice among traditional communities in Kenya, along with many parts of Africa and the country’s Muslim community. The female politicians believe that the wife and the family should have a right to know if the husband is going to bring another party into the home.
It’s infuriating to know that male politicians do not care about women’s rights in Kenya. Women are only allowed to marry one husband in the country, yet they are allowing men to do so without the wife’s consent. The male politicians also claim that marriage should be done out of love, but when the wife is not given a choice in the matter of polygamy, how can love be fostered? Sign this petition and demand the president to veto this atrocious bill.
Dear President Uhuru Kenyatta,
It has come to my attention that your country’s parliament – namely the male politicians – have drafted a bill that would allow men to marry as many women as he would like, without the wife’s consent. This egregious bill steps upon the rights of women in your country, and does nothing to promote equality.
I am writing this letter to demand that you veto this bill should it need your signature. Just because polygamy is a tradition among your country, this new bill violates women’s rights. How is it fair that a man is allowed to marry as many women as he wants, without consulting his wife and family? And how is it also fair to deny a women these options simply because she is a women? This law does nothing to promote love, it only promotes bitterness, resentment, and anger.
