Target: Texas Governor Rick Perry
Goal: Petition Governor Perry to lower colossal pollution levels in Texas
Recently, Texas Governor Rick Perry visited California in an attempt to entice businesses to relocate to his state. While this would be profitable for the corporations—Texas offers lower taxes and regulations to businesses—it would increase the already-devastating levels of pollution in the state. Governor Perry’s state currently generates the highest level of pollution in the entire United States by a large margin. It is time to put the environment before company bank accounts. Tell Governor Perry to stop campaigning to bring in new factories and instead work to lower the dangerous levels of pollution already present in Texas.
According to a 2012 report from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Texas was responsible for 393 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions that year. This translates to roughly 12.5% of all greenhouse gas emissions released across the nation, an astoundingly high percentage. An overwhelming number of power plants, and the oil industry, can be held responsible for this overwhelming amount of carbon pollution.
As someone who does not believe in climate change, Governor Perry continues to ignore the increase in droughts, heat waves, poor air quality, and wildfires—all of which scientists at The American Association for the Advancement of Science have agreed are direct results of a disrupted climate. Regardless of his personal beliefs, the governor needs to step up to protect his people. These companies are polluting the air and the environment at astonishing rates. It must be stopped before irreversible damage is done.
It is clear Texas has a problem. The state single-handedly produces 12.5% of all greenhouse gas emissions produced in the United States, and yet the governor is actively trying to recruit more businesses to relocate. It is not okay to put profits before the environment any longer—393 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions in one year is enough. Tell Governor Perry to start within his own state to lower these dangerously high levels of pollution immediately.
Dear Governor Perry,
I read about your latest trip to California, the purpose of which was to bring more businesses to the state of Texas. However, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Texas was already responsible for 393 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions in 2012. This output is the highest in the nation by a large margin. The next highest, California, produced 114.6 million metric tons. Clearly this is a problem. The environment is suffering and soon the damage will be permanent if you do not start acting now.
Regardless of your personal beliefs, The American Association for the Advancement of Science has openly and often stated that climate change is a direct result of human actions. This means each power plant and every oil venture in Texas is contributing to an increase in heat waves, droughts, wildfires, and poor air quality. These are dangerous consequences and should be taken seriously.
Please take action immediately to protect your citizens and the environment by working to lower the astronomical levels of pollution in Texas.
