Target: Governor of Michigan, Rick Snyder
Goal: Congratulate the first same-sex couples to be legally married in Michigan
On March 22, 2014, Glenna DeJong and Marsha Caspar became the very first gay couple to be married in the state of Michigan, just one day after the state’s ban on gay marriage was removed from the state constitution. Same-sex couples in Michigan finally have the same marriage rights as heterosexual couples in the state. Several more marriages occurred throughout different counties in different county clerks offices all over the state.
Ever since Michigan implemented a gay marriage ban in 2004, same-sex couples were unable to be legally wed. Many couples have waited far too long for this day to happen. Now that it is finally happening, elated screams fill the air as gay and lesbian couples are finally able to be married by the state. Glenna DeJong and Marsha Caspar, one of the same-sex couples wedded on Saturday, have waited nearly 27 years for their right to be married.
Although the wait for these couples to be able to marry was far too long, now is a time for celebration because they no longer have a ban holding them back from marrying the person they love. Sign this petition and celebrate this joyful moment in history.
Dear Governor Rick Snyder,
It has come to my attention that the ban on same-sex marriages has been removed from your state’s constitution. I must say that I am very happy for this change. Many lesbian and gay couples in the state of Michigan have waited far too long to finally be able to wed the person they love. Some have waited nearly 27 years for this moment to arrive.
Ever since the gay marriage ban in 2004, same-sex couples in Michigan were unable to be legally wed their partners. But now is a time for celebration, for they are now able to legally marry the person they love. I would like to express my happiness for all the same-sex couples and my admiration towards their patience because it must not have been easy to wait years and years to finally have equal marriage rights. I hope that many more states will follow in the footsteps of your state of Michigan.
