Punish Police Officer for Shooting Dog

Target: Filer Police Chief, Tim Reeves

Goal: Punish a police officer who shot a dog while on duty

An officer from the Filer Police Department in Idaho recently shot a dog to death at a young boy’s birthday party. According to news reports, Officer Tarek Hassani was called on duty to a home, based on reports that dogs were running loose around a neighborhood. The owner of the black labrador that was shot believed that the situation could have been handled differently, because his dog was not violent or aggressive. The officer shot the dog only yards away from the children’s party. He could have easily harmed not only the dog, but also the children nearby.

The video released by the news shows the dogs approaching the police officer’s vehicle as he was trying to step out of his car. After yelling at the dogs to “step back” he fired his gun point blank at one of the dogs. The officer believed that the dog was trying to bite him, while the owner of the pet exclaimed that his dog has never bit anyone before. The officer then apologized to the owner for slaying his dog.

This situation could have been handled differently. The police officer could have called the owner from his car and told him to hold back his dog. He also could have called animal control for help. Officer Hassani did not have to shoot the dog point blank. The dog got loose from its owner, which is a very common situation. He had no reason to kill it.

Please sign this petition, because this officer needs to be punished for killing a dog and causing pain to its owners.

Dear Filer Police Chief Tim Reeves,

Officer Tarek Hassani shot a dog to death and was not punished for his actions. Although you may see his actions as a safety measure, he was in his car when the dogs approached him. If he didn’t feel safe, he could have stayed in his car and called for backup or help from animal control. This incident shows that officers who enter the police force need training so that accidents like this do not happen.

If Officer Hassani does not get punished, it will send out a message that animal abuse is acceptable. He needs to be punished for killing this dog, or else he will do it again the next time he is approached by an animal. He needs basic training on how to handle animals in situations like this. A family lost their pet and justice needs to be served. Please punish the officer for his wrongdoings.

  1. People that hold a position as yourself to uphold the law and under oath no less have no business being allowed to “protect and to serve”. You are pathetic. As stated in C.O.P.S. publication “no officer should have gun drawn when responding to a incident with a dog, or shoot a dog for any reason, that there are many other ways to handle a situation with a aggressive dog”. You abuse your power, kids look up to police and you are a POS disgrace and so is everyone within your department that backs your corrupt shit !
