Target: U.S. District Judge Bernard Friedman
Goal: Commend federal judge for declaring Michigan’s same-sex marriage ban unconstitutional
U.S. District Judge Bernard Friedman issued a preliminary injunction after a trial in which two nurses contested Michigan’s ban on same-sex marriage, which was passed by state voters in 2004. The couple argued that the state ban infringed on the Equal Protection Clause of the Constitution, which promises all people equal protection under the law. The ruling means county clerks can immediately begin issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples in Michigan.
If the ruling is upheld, Michigan will become the 18th state in the nation to legalize same-sex marriage. Each state that allows same-sex marriage represents a major milestone in the battle for U.S. marriage equality. Judge Friedman’s ruling bravely protects the rights of all of Michigan’s citizens.
Unfortunately, if an emergency stay is ordered the effects of Friedman’s ruling will effectively freeze, pending the outcome of a lengthy appeals process. Show your support for Judge Friedman and his staunch defense of equal rights in Michigan.
Thank you for taking a courageous stance in defense of marriage equality in Michigan. Your ruling sends a message to Michigan and the nation that justice and liberty will prevail, and that the love of two people can transcend societal limitations imposed through bigotry and fear.
I commend and support you for so publicly and authoritatively extending the right to marry to long-suffering couples, who richly deserve their chance to make their union official in the eyes of the world. Thank you for your dedication to protecting equal rights.
