Target: Administrator Gina McCarthy
Goal: Remove loophole that allows factories to pollute atmosphere beyond safe levels
SSM stands for Startup, Shutdown, and Malfunction, which is a loophole that allows coal plants and other factories to pollute above the levels indicated by the Clean Air Act. This loophole has been exploited and allows factories to claim these emissions as “short-term incidents.” Some states even place exemptions that shield these factories from reporting these emissions. These emissions must be reported and stopped; you can help close this loophole by signing this petition.
Of course, many of these factories don’t want this loophole to be closed. However by utilizing this loophole, nearby communities and neighbors have to take the brunt of the consequences, inhaling these spikes of emissions while factories continue to profit. Unfortunately, it is the poor and impoverished communities who suffer. For children and the elderly, inhaling these toxic fumes could lead to health problems, and the Environmental Protection Agency needs to promptly address this.
Released into our atmosphere from coal plants and other factories are chemicals like mercury, carbon, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter, also known as fly ash. Sulfur dioxide is found in acid rain, which damages forests, crops and soils, and acidifies our water sources. Nitrogen oxide is responsible for ground layer ozone, and while ozone protects us from UV rays, at ground level this chemical is extremely dangerous. Particulate matter can cause bronchitis, aggravated asthma, premature death, and creates haze.
If coal plants and other factories are allowed to exploit this loophole, they are endangering the lives of fellow human beings, wildlife, and our planet. This loophole must be immediately removed and stricter restrictions must be placed by the EPA. Sign this petition and demand protection for our health and the health of our planet.
Dear Administrator Gina McCarthy,
The SSM loophole allows factories to release emissions without regard for the Clean Air Act. These levels that were established by the Clean Air Act ensure that our people and our environment are safe, but when factories are allowed to release emissions that are not recorded, they are free to pollute our planet as befits them. I do not like the thought of our planet and communities suffering at the hands of a factory and insist that this loophole be removed and restrictions be placed.
It is not right for these companies to pollute our precious planet. With the dangers of climate change, all of our power plants must be responsible in how much pollution is released into our atmosphere. Please ensure the public’s and planet’s safety by removing the SSM loophole.
