Target: President Barack Obama
Goal: Make the Organ Mountains a national monument
During his recent State of the Union Address, President Barack Obama promised he would use his executive powers to save and protect our environment. With this promise in mind, the citizens of New Mexico are urging him to make the Organ Mountains a national monument. The mountains are home to endangered plants and wildlife, and declaring them a national monument will safeguard these species.
The Organ Mountains are one of the most iconic landmarks in southern New Mexico and on a clear day, the mountains can be seen from over 100 miles away. The land is home to cacti, bald eagles, and the pronghorn antelope; the land even boasts over 10,000 years of human culture and history. But the habitat is critical for two endangered species of cacti, and the mountains are at risk of being destroyed.
Threatened with the looming dangers of hard rock mining and other developments, the Organ Mountains would be scarred and the wildlife chased off or killed by encroaching humans. What’s more, the Dona Ana County is the fastest growing county in the state and it’s near the mountains. Without federal protection, it is very likely that humans would destroy this pristine place.
Yet there is hope. Recently President Obama made the Rio Grande del Norte a national monument in 2012. Citizens of New Mexico are hoping that the president will return and grant the Organ Mountains protection. Many of these citizens consider the mountains essential to their economy and the character of their state. Sign this petition and ensure that these lands are safeguarded for future generations to enjoy.
Dear President Barack Obama,
I wish to address the issue of the Organ Mountains becoming a national monument. I firmly believe you should grant these mountains protection, as our planet continues to be ravaged by human destruction and encroachment. These mountains are sacred to citizens of New Mexico, and while the land is harsh, there is still an unbelievable amount of beauty.
These people believe that the mountains add character to their cities and homes while aiding their economy. These lands are also crucial for the survival of many species, including the endangered Night-blooming cereus. If urban developments and hard rock mining were to enter these areas, they would destroy these magnificent mountains. Therefore, I am urging you to make the Organ Mountains a national monument.
