Demand Justice for Murdered Activist

Target: Crimean Prime Minister Sergei Aksyonov

Goal: Investigate enforced disappearance and murder of Reshat Ametov

Political upheaval in Crimea has fostered widespread lawlessness  in the form of intimidation, illegal incarceration, and even murder of peaceful activists. Reshat Ametov was last seen during a peaceful protest on March 3, where three unidentified men in camouflage jackets forcibly led him away to an undisclosed location. Family members were unable to ascertain his whereabouts despite seeking assistance from law enforcement. Police discovered Ametov’s body, bearing signs of violent death and possibly torture, two weeks after his disappearance.

Ametov was a father of three who actively participated in local government to advocate for his community’s needs peacably.

Over the past month, Crimean authorities have completely failed to reign in armed men harassing and intimidating citizens throughout the region, particularly peaceful protesters. Illegal searches of persons and vehicles, beatings, disappearances, and now murder have all been documented recently in the region. The lack of official response emboldens armed paramilitaries to continue perpetrating these gross perversions of justice.

Call upon the newly appointed Prime Minister of Crimea, the nominal head of law enforcement in the country, to investigate the abduction and murder of Ametov. This heinous crime stands as  a rallying cry for the order desperately needed in a dangerous and destabilized Crimea.

Prime Minister Aksyonov,

Over the past month, armed bands of unregulated paramilitaries have terrorized activists and ordinary citizens throughout Crimea. On March 16, the murdered body of Reshat Ametov was discovered, his only crime being the attendance of a peaceful demonstration. He had been abducted by armed men in military jackets with no insignia or other symbols of governmental authority, subjected to unknown treatment, violently killed, and deposited outside of Belogorsk.

As the head of law enforcement in Crimea, you owe it to the family of this man and the citizens of Crimea to push for a thorough investigation of this man’s death. Justice demands that thugs no longer have the ability to kidnap and murder citizens with impunity. Please take this important step in restoring order and safety to your beleaguered countrymen.
