Target: President Juan Manuel Santos
Goal: Encourage Colombian authorities to investigate killings by deadly crime mobs
The residents of Port Buenaventura live in fear as crime mobs harass, victimize and brutally kill hundreds of people for petty reasons that include crossing ‘invisible’ borders of rival mobs and disobeying orders. These paramilitary groups have launched a worldwide uproar amongst human rights groups as Colombia becomes the country with the second largest number of displaced people in the world.
More than 2,000 cases of ‘disappearances’ have occurred in Buenaventura alone. And, more than 19,000 people have since left Buenaventura to escape the wrath of these violent crime mobs. According to a Human Rights Watch report, simply walking on the wrong side of the street, seen as a sign of disobedience or disrespect, can get an innocent person abducted and killed. Reports of children being kidnapped from minibuses and recruited are widespread. Even more alarming are the number of people being savagely killed and brutally dismembered.
Known in Buenaventura as ‘chop houses’ or ‘chop-up-sites’, countless people can be heard screaming and begging for their lives, in the dead of night, by other residents. Victims are dismembered alive, their bodies dumped into nearby waterways. Some families don’t even get the satisfaction of a loved ones remains.
Frightened and uncertain about what to do, many residents of Buenaventura don’t report the crimes and have even witnessed police collaboration with the sinister crime mobs. As the livelihoods of the remaining inhabitants of Port Buenaventura hang in the valance, it is the responsibility of Colombian authorities to end these vicious killings and prosecute members of the thuggish clans for their hellish crimes.
Sign the petition to urge President Juan Manuel Santos to take these ‘disappearances’ seriously and restore peace to Port Buenaventura before it’s too late.
Dear President Juan Manuel Santos,
The paramilitary groups of the Urabenos and the Empresa have turned Port Buenaventura into a savage killing field — forcing thousands of residents from their homes and making Colombia the country with the second largest number of displaced people in the world. It has also come to my attention that there is police corruption as witnesses state that collaboration between authorities and these deadly crime mobs are occurring.
Thousands of people have either ‘disappeared’ or become dismembered in chop-up-houses where citizens have reported screams in the middle of the night and bodies washing ashore of innocent people who’ve been savagely murdered or severed alive.
Uncorrupted police presence needs to be active in Buenaventura and an investigation desperately needs to be launched into the merciless killings that have plagued this port city. I encourage you not to turn a blind eye to the suffering of the people who’ve lost loved ones, witnessed violent deaths and live in fear of their lives. You must restore peace to Buenaventura at once.
