Commend Musician for Promoting a Vegan Diet

Target: Moby, internationally celebrated musician

Goal: Commend Moby for sharing the story of why he went vegan

Superstar electronic musician Moby recently took to Rolling Stone to pen a thoughtful, informative and compassionate editorial which detailed the process behind his adopting a vegan lifestyle. By promoting a vegan diet, Moby is helping to save the lives of animals and improve the health of readers who become inspired by his words.

Earlier this month, Moby wrote the opinion piece entitled “Why I’m Vegan” to encourage people to rethink the way they look at animals as food. He begins by telling the story of how his kitten Tucker helped him decide to become a vegetarian in 1985. “I love this cat. I would do anything to protect him and make him happy and keep him from harm. He has four legs and two eyes and an amazing brain and an incredibly rich emotional life,” Moby explains. “I would never in a trillion years think of hurting this cat. So why am I eating other animals who have four (or two) legs, two eyes, amazing brains, and rich emotional lives? And sitting on the stairs in suburban Connecticut with Tucker the cat I became a vegetarian.” Two years later, Moby went all in on a vegan diet.

He continues on with the piece outlining the health benefits that vegans reap as a result of their diet explaining, “I found that eating meat and dairy and eggs are to a very large extent responsible for people developing diabetes, heart disease and cancer.” He also exposes the environmental destruction that is caused by the meat industry. “I found out that producing a pound of soybeans requires 200 gallons of water but that producing a pound of beef requires 1,800 gallons of water. I found out that a leading cause of tropical deforestation is cutting down trees to create grazing land for livestock,” Moby says.

Besides being a vegan for over 20 years, Moby also works tirelessly as an animal activist. In 2013, he appeared in a video promoting shelter adoptions for Best Friends Animal Society. He also teamed up with PETA to design fashionable t-shirts that proudly display the words, “Love Animals, Don’t Eat Them.” Please take a moment to thank Moby for continuously using his celebrity to promote the humane treatment of animals.
