Target: Wayne LaPierre, National Rifle Association CEO
Goal: Stop gun lobbyists from holding up the President’s nominee for Surgeon General
Dr. Vivek Murthy could make an excellent Surgeon General of the United States, but the Senate may never get a chance to confirm his appointment. President Obama nominated Murthy for his work as an attending physician and instructor at Harvard Medical School, his experience as a business founder, and his support for modest gun control. But this is where the problem lies, according to a recent article in The Nation. Pro-gun lobbyists from the National Rifle Association (NRA) have been hard at work making sure that Murthy never becomes America’s highest-ranking public health spokesperson.
Murthy’s views on gun control can hardly be considered radical. He has supported mandatory safety training, limits on ammunition, and a ban on assault weapons according to the article, but these beliefs are in line with measures now supported by the majority of Americans and health professionals. Guns are responsible for some 30,000 deaths every year in the United States, roughly the same number of people killed in auto accidents. For years the NRA has attempted to hide and obscure the facts on gun violence, and to fight the nomination of public officials they see as challenging to NRA values. The group went so far in the past as to hold up nomination of the director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives for seven long years.
Demand that the NRA cease its lobbying against common-sense gun control, and end its attempts to block the appointment of Dr. Vivek Murthy and others like him who are concerned with the epidemic of gun violence in America.
Dear Mr. LaPierre,
The majority of Americans support some form of gun control, and the consensus of the medical community remains that gun violence is a serious threat to the nation’s well-being. In light of this, it shocks and disturbs me to see the depths your organization will stoop to in order to prevent common-sense gun control measures from becoming mainstream. The NRA’s decision to “score” the confirmation vote of Dr. Vivek Murthy to the office of Surgeon General is just the latest example.
When tens of thousands of Americans die every year from gunshot wounds, how can the NRA continue to lobby against assault weapon bans and mandatory gun registries? Such measures could dramatically reduce the number of deaths and help law enforcement track down criminals. But it seems you would rather suppress crucial research into this public health issue, cloud the facts, and ignore the very real dangers posed by unchecked gun ownership.
I must insist that the NRA cease its questionable tactics, and allow the facts to speak for themselves. End your organization’s habit of blocking confirmation of officials like Dr. Vivek Murthy who truly have the best interests of the American people at heart.
