Target: President Jacob Zuma
Goal: Demand that South Africa’s president return to the public millions of taxpayer dollars used to upgrade his personal home
A recent report highlighting political corruption in South Africa has detailed extravagant upgrades to the personal residence of President Jacob Zuma. The changes include a pool, a cattle enclosure, and an amphitheater. These upgrades cost the taxpayers approximately $23 million. These findings were outlined by Public Protector Thuli Madonsela, who was tasked by an independent commission to investigate abuses of power by those in the South African government. Mr. Zuma, and members of his government who were implicated, should be condemned for their misuse of public funds.
In the report, Thuli Madonsela recommends that Mr. Zuma repay the public for the renovations that he made to his home. Mr. Zuma explained the renovations, which were originally constructed in 2009, as security improvements. This has become a massive point of contention between members of the public Mr. Zuma and his African National Congress party. The public has the right to be outraged by the exorbitant cost of private upgrades, which were originally quoted as costing $2 million. The relationship between Mr. Zuma and the company that installed the renovations should also be investigated.
The report alleges that Mr. Zuma misled the parliament in previous testimony about the issue. The president even went so far as to say that he used his own funds in order to construct the buildings. These statements, coupled with the massive amount billed to the taxpayers, should be enough to impeach most leaders. Sign this petition to demand that Jacob Zuma be brought to justice for massive misuse of public funds.
Dear President Jacob Zuma,
The recent report made by Public Protector Thuli Madonsela against you and your government is quite damning. The allegations that you yourself used such a massive amount of public funds for a private renovation to your home should be enough to remove you from power. I ask that you follow the recommendation of Ms. Madonsela and immediately repay the public for the construction on your home.
I also ask that you issue an apology to the public and allow them to decide your fate as their leader. Misleading your people so greatly is not in your job description. These actions have hurt you at home but have also undermined your country’s standing on the international stage. I ask you to do what is right for your country now.
