Target: Overland High School girls’ soccer team
Goal: Praise the girls’ soccer team for standing up against referee’s unfair treatment
Samah Aidah is a soccer player for the Overland High school girl’s soccer team. When soccer referees in Aurora, Colorado prohibited Aidah from playing in a game until she removed her hijab (which is a veil worn by many Muslim females and covers the head and chest), her teammates took matters into their own hands. The girl’s soccer team took a stand in support of their teammate and her freedom of religion by putting on head scarves that were like Aidah’s hijab.
The Federation International Football Association (FIFA) lifted its ban on head covers/veils earlier this year, thus permitting people who wear hijabs and head coverings to fully partake in the games. But it seems that the referees in Colorado had not caught up with the new rules. Fortunately, the girl’s soccer team of Overland High School was there to teach the referee a lesson about what fairness and acceptance of all religions really means. One of the teammate’s twitter posts of all of the girls wearing hijabs went viral and received over forty thousand retweets.
Please sign this petition to thank the girls for protesting what they saw was wrong on the referee’s part.
Dear Overland High School’s girls’ soccer team,
You are an amazing group of girls. When you saw that your teammate Samah Aida was being discriminated against by a referee, you came to her rescue without hesitation. What you did was inspirational and courageous. You didn’t know if what you were doing was going to affect your spot on the team, but you stood in solidarity and showed the referees who they were dealing with. Even at a young age, you all were able to see that freedom of expression of a person’s religious right is important. It is sad that a grown referee couldn’t see that.
Thank you for showing the world that the new generation is able teach everybody a lesson about what equality really means. I’m sure that you have made a huge difference in Samah Aida’s life. Thank you for showing her that she has the support of her awesome teammates and of the world.
