Target: Prime Minister Sergey Aksyonov
Goal: Order a transparent investigation into the disappearance and murder of Reshat Ametov
With the recent political unrest in Crimea and Ukraine, a man named Reshat Ametov was reported missing during a peaceful protest and was later found dead in the woods. Taken from uniformed men with no visible insignias, it is difficult to discern who committed the murder. His family and the rest of the world want answers, and the government should order an immediate and impartial investigation.
Ametov’s relatives stated that they last saw him on March 3, 2013 in Lenin Square in Simferpool, Ukraine. He was participating in a peaceful protest in front of the Crimean Council of Ministers Building. That was where three unidentified men approached Ametov and led him away. When Ametov did not return that night, his family filed a police report, but heard nothing for two weeks. On March 16, police found a body bearing violent marks in a nearby woods. The next day the family identified the body as Reshat Ametov.
A father of three children and a construction worker, Ametov was well known in his community. He frequently made petitions to local authorities about ways to improve the neighborhood, and discussed his issues on his Facebook page about the Crimean Tartars and the situation in Crimea. When his body was found, it was deemed that the man was violently tortured, and transparent tape was found wrapped around his head and hands. Local police told Ametov’s family that the death was registered “violent” and that pending investigations will give further details.
There are concerns that the investigation won’t be transparent, considering the political turmoil rife in the country. It is imperative that despite these conflicts, this investigation is conducted fairly. Murder will not solve the problems of Ukraine or Crimea, it will only intensify the violence. It is obvious that Ametov’s life was taken brutally, and those responsible should be prosecuted and placed in jail. Demand a fair investigation into the murder of Reshat Ametov.
Dear Prime Minister Sergey Aksyonov,
It has come to my attention that a man by the name of Rashat Ametov was found dead and bore markings of torture in the woods of Belogorsk. This father of three has been vocal about his opinions both with local authorities and on his Facebook page. It was during a peaceful protest when he was led away by three unidentified men. When he did not return that night, his family filed a police report and two weeks later found his body in the woods.
I want to know what happened to this man. I want the full uncensored truth and I want those responsible for his death to be prosecuted. Whether these men went after Ametov for his activism, opinions, or simply being at the protest shouldn’t be a justified reason for ending Ametov’s life. Ensure that this man receives a fair investigation so his family can receive closure.
