Target: Senator Clayton Hee
Goal: Illegalize the eating of dogs and cats in Hawaii
Despite the misconception that eating companion animals has long been outlawed, there are still states in which the practice of slaughtering dogs and cats for food is perfectly legal. Hawaii, one of those states, is currently pushing for new laws that will regard such slaughter as animal cruelty and make it a crime to eat dogs or cats. This legislation must be passed immediately so that this cruel practice can finally be put to a stop.
A recent investigation by the New York Post brought the issue to public attention. It came after a hearing that took place in Hawaii discussed SB 2026, which would protect pets from being killed, cooked and eaten. According to the report, the Humane Society of Hawaii receives multiple reports of companion animals being killed and eaten every year. The numbers are likely much higher than those actually reported to the Humane Society because it is nearly impossible for law enforcement to catch someone in the act.
The prohibition of eating dogs and cats in Hawaii is not currently documented in any written legislation, but SB 2026 seeks to put an end to that. The bill “Prohibits the slaughtering or trafficking of dogs or cats for human consumption. Amends the definition of ‘pet animal’ to include any dog or cat rather than only dogs or cats not bred for human consumption.” The problem with slaughtering companion animals isn’t simply that they are pets, but that there is also no way to regulate the slaughter. Laws require farms to slaughter animals in ways that do not result in excessive panic, anxiety, and pain. The dogs and cats slaughtered for food are often killed in ways that are cruel and result in a great deal of pain and suffering.
Please take a moment to sign the petition below to support SB 2026 and finally outlaw the practice of eating dogs and cats in Hawaii.
Dear Senator Hee,
You recently sponsored SB 2026 that would finally outlaw, rather than prohibit, the slaughter of companion animals for food. The Humane Society of Hawaii receives multiple reports of dogs and cats being eaten each year. These deaths are not only completely unnecessary, but also often torturous and cruel.
Thank you for supporting this issue and working to protect dogs and cats throughout the state. You have my full support and I hope this cruel practice will soon be put to an end.
