Commend City’s Fight Against Pollution

Paris at Night

Target: President Francois Hollande

Goal: Commend the French government for ban on driving to reduce pollution

The French government recently imposed a driving ban in Paris due to high pollution levels. Because of a series of warm days and light breezes, a cloud of pollution has plagued the city for days, causing a rise in hospital visits and respiratory problems. While many countries endure this problem, few do anything to rectify it. Commend the French government for reducing pollution, and doing it swiftly.

Hundreds of police officers are patrolling the streets of Paris, ready to fine citizens who have broken the driving ban. Those who have electric or hybrid cars, carry three or more passengers, or have odd-numbered license plates are excused from the ban, but if the weather continues to be warm, vehicles with odd-numbered license plates will be banned as well. The government has given free public transportation for the fourth consecutive day, and traffic jams have decreased by a whopping 60%.

Authorities recently recorded very high rates of pollutant particles in the air, specifically those from car emissions. The country’s unseasonably warm days, cool nights, and light breezes have kept clouds of pollutants sitting over the city of Paris and various other French cities. The particulate matter is known to cause respiratory problems when inhaled and authorities have noted a rise in hospital visits, particularly in children. Levels of this particulate matter have risen to a level of 180 micrograms per cubic meter, well above the acceptable level of 80. When you take into comparison the levels of Beijing – which hover at 120 and peak at 750, the French government is acting responsibly to this pollution. It is likely that city bans on driving and other daily activities will be passed in the near future.

If countries are not willing to make changes to their pollution policies now, dire actions will be needed in the future. Commend the French government for their swift action to protecting both their citizens and the environment.

Dear President Francois Hollande,

I am writing to thank your government for your swift action in curbing the effects of pollution in Paris. I realize that many cities and countries are struggling with pollution levels and I am grateful that your government is acting responsibly on this issue.

I realize that pollution levels are incurring more hospital visits, especially for children, and I hope this ban will make it easier on your citizens. However I also ask that your government continue to be vigilant on the effects of pollution and make policies to prevent this problem from arising again. Again I commend your government for protecting your citizens and the environment.
