Target: Idaho Governor C.L. “Butch” Otter
Goal: Oppose new legislation allowing concealed weapons to be carried on student campuses
This past month, Idaho lawmakers approved a bill allowing concealed weapons to be carried onto university campuses. Clearing the House of Representatives by a stunning 50-19 votes, lawmakers argued it will enhance campus safety and set a good precedent in the country by strongly supporting second amendment rights. However, studies show that allowing students to carry guns will actually have the exact opposite effect and will endanger even more lives. Oppose this legislation and ensure that Governor Otter vetoes this bill.
Under this potential new law, any person with a permit could carry a concealed weapon on any campus. What’s required to receive a permit? A simple 8-hour course advised by a National Rifle Association instructor will guarantee the legal ability to carry a gun into the classroom. Idaho lawmakers argue that this will make campuses safer for students, and will also support gun rights spelled out in the constitution.
However, common sense and research studies indicate that concealed weapons on campus would do the exact opposite of making it safer. The Guardian reports that for every 100 people in America, 88 own guns. In the U.K., for every 100 people, only 6.2 own guns. What would seem to be a direct result are the 31,347 American citizens killed by guns in 2009. Yet the U.K. only lost 39 people to gun violence in 2008. Statistics clearly show that more guns equals more deaths.
Oppose Idaho’s bill allowing concealed weapons on campuses. While lawmakers are purporting this action would make campuses safer, in reality the number of deaths would increase. Statistics have proven that higher rates of gun ownership correlate with higher death rates. The last thing America needs is more campus shootings. Schools should be a safe space for the country’s youth to gather and receive an education. Sign this petition to tell Governor Otter that this bill should not be passed into law.
Dear Governor Otter,
I recently learned about the concealed weapon law about to pass in Idaho. Should you sign this into effect, any person who takes an 8-hour course can carry a concealed gun onto campuses and into the classroom. While lawmakers are stating that it will help enhance student safety, it has been shown that the exact opposite is true.
Studies have shown that higher rates of gun ownership are directly linked to higher death rates involving guns. Approximately 88 out of every 100 Americans owns a gun, and 31,347 citizens lost their lives in gun related violence in 2009. In the U.K., only 6.2 out of every 100 citizens owns a gun and just 39 people were killed by guns in 2008, as reported by The Guardian.
It would be disastrous if this bill were passed into law. Campuses should be safe spaces for students to learn and grow, not where they should be afraid of death at the hands of a classmate. Please veto this immediately.
