Target: Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott
Goal: Prevent the suicides of indigenous children in Queensland, Australia
Sadly, suicide has become the leading cause of death for many children under the age of seventeen. More than half of those suicides are the result of child abuse. However, the suicide rate among indigenous children is over five times the average rate for non-indigenous children. Many of these children lived their lives subjected to abuse, alcohol and substance use, disciplinary problems and other issues.
The Aboriginals and the Torres Strait Islanders, two indigenous peoples of Australia, both have higher child death rates than children who are non-indigenous. In fact, the Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islander’s child death rate was more than two times the rate of their non-indigenous peers. There are many issues that are said to influence the fatal actions of these children; social and economic disadvantage, loss of cultural continuity, and disorderly social circumstances are some of the many risk factors involved. Research has revealed that there are higher numbers of child deaths in remote, low-socioeconomic regions, which is where many indigenous people often reside.
The problems and issues that indigenous people and their children face are often more difficult than those facing non-indigenous people. These issues, such as socioeconomic disadvantages, have had a negative effect on their mental states. A plan must be implemented in order to ensure fewer indigenous child suicides in the future. These children must be reassured of the importance of their lives. Sign this petition and urge the Australian Prime Minister to implement a solution to these child suicides.
Dear Prime Minister Tony Abbott,
It has come to my attention that the rate of indigenous child suicides in your country is more than five times higher than the child suicides among non-indigenous people. I understand that all child suicides are equally horrifying and tragic, however the indigenous children and their families are faced with issues such as social and economic disadvantage and the loss of continuity in their cultures.
In order to ensure that there will be fewer indigenous child suicides in your country of Australia, I urge you to strongly consider comprising a plan that will reassure these children that their lives are not as bleak as they think. I ask that you take steps to prevent indigenous child suicides in the future, because for the indigenous people such as the Aboriginals and the Torres Strait Islanders, their children are vital in the continuity of their culture and traditions.
