Target: President Barack Obama
Goal: Commend the president for protecting the Mendocino coastline in California
In keeping a promise made in his State of the Union address, President Obama recently expanded upon the California Coastline National Monument, adding to it the Mendocino coastline. The move will protect 1,665 acres of spectacular scenery and habitat for both wildlife and tourists to enjoy. Commend the president for protecting the environment.
In 2000, President Bill Clinton created the California Coastline National Monument, which encompasses more than 20,000 rocks, islands, exposed reefs, and pinnacles. President Obama is the first to tack on an addition to this monument. In a statement, the president claimed that he was keeping his promise in the State of the Union address and preserving whatever lands he could with his executive powers. By adding on the Mendocino coastline, the president will be protecting coastal bluffs and shelves, tide pools, onshore dunes, coastal prairies, riverbanks, and the mouth and estuary of the Garcia River.
The Mendocino coastline drew in nearly $90 million in 2012 from tourism alone, where thousands come to the coastline for hiking, fishing, and viewing the wildlife. The wind-swept landscape is home to harbor seals, Stellar sea lions, and elephant seals. It is also home to the Earth and Point Arena beaver and the Behren’s silver spot butterfly. A plethora of rare birds also make their home here, including the black oystercatcher, the little willow flycatcher, and the black-crowned night heron.
The coastline also has thousands of years worth of human history. Here the Central Pomo Indians made this place their home. Archeological dig sites found middens, chert, and obsidian tools used by the indians. Many of these artifacts have been dated from 4,000 years ago or farther.
It is apparent that both humans and wildlife have enjoyed this dramatic landscape for thousands of years. It also crucial that future generations get to enjoy this scenery and appreciate the life that our planet supports. Sign this petition and commend President Barack Obama for protecting the Mendocino Coastline.
Dear President Barack Obama,
I am writing to commend you for the addition of the Mendocino coastline to the California Coastline National Monument. I realize that you are the first president to tack on additional lands to this monument and I am very pleased to hear that habitats in this area will continue to thrive thanks to the protection of the government.
It is true that many of our habitats are threatened by human activity, thus making the possibility of it disappearing entirely very likely. And unfortunately if these habitats and animals disappear, future generations cannot see or appreciate such wonderful wildlife. I am grateful to hear that you appreciate these lands enough to protect them. Please continue protecting our planet with whatever powers are at your disposal.
