Target: Governor Jay Nixon
Goal: Condemn bill that will triple abortion waiting period
A Missouri bill that has been passed by the House would make Missouri the third state to require a 72 hour waiting period for a woman to have an abortion after seeing a doctor. This bill triples the current 24 hour waiting time for a woman seeking an abortion and pro-choice advocates are concerned that the waiting period will bring on further complications. The state already has measures to prevent and convince women not to get an abortion; this bill will be another obstacle and should be immediately condemned.
The Missouri House voted for the passing of this legislation when hundreds of anti-abortion activists rallied at the state’s Capitol. The House Speaker Tim Jones spoke to the crowd saying, “If you are going to make a decision about life or death, shouldn’t it take more than three days to think about it?” But opponents of the bill say that this legislation is an affront to women’s rights, and will force them further into their pregnancies. Many say that it is wrong for politicians to force women to further delay their abortion and undergo more complicated procedures.
Other Missouri laws on abortion include the required presence of a doctor in the room to administer the initial dose of a drug to use for the abortion procedure. Doctors must also give women a variety of written information about the procedure, and give them the opportunity to listen to the heart beat. The waiting period bill will also add a video produced by the state officials that adds information about abortion. However, the waiting period doesn’t apply when doctors deem the instance to be a medical emergency.
Politicians shouldn’t have the right to decide what a woman can do with her body, and placing obstacles before she can have an abortion only complicates the procedure. While the intention of the bill is to make the woman carefully consider her decision, imposing such a restriction based on this purpose is unfair and biased. Sign this petition and condemn this bill.
Dear Governor Jay Nixon,
I am writing to show my disdain for a bill that would triple the waiting period for a woman to get an abortion. While I understand that the intention of the bill is to make a woman carefully consider her decision, it violates women’s rights, could further complicate her abortion, and implies that a woman has not mulled over this decision before seeing a doctor.
I firmly believe that politicians should not have a say in what a woman does with her body. Each person has their own beliefs and expectations about pregnancy and caring for a child. These beliefs should not be placed on everyone. I hope that this bill will be challenged and I declare my contempt for it.
