Target: C.L. “Butch” Otter, Governor of Idaho
Goal: Ask the governor to stop allowing firearms on college campuses
In March 2014, Idaho lawmakers approved a bill that allowed concealed firearms to be brought onto university and college campuses. The measure was greatly favored by the state’s Senate and will almost certainly be signed into law. If it actually does get passed, Idaho will become the seventh state in America that allows guns on college campuses. Although people such as Boise State University President Bob Kustra fought against the bill, worrying that it would cause more harm to students on campus, Republican lawmakers in the state legislature chose to support the pro-gun policy anyway.
This law has made a large number of professors and school officials worry about their own safety. Knowing that their students are allowed to bring firearms to school makes them feel like they need to have one too. What would surely improve campus safety would be heightened security, louder alarms, strong locks, and well practiced safety drills.
Right now, the United States has the highest gun ownership rate in the world, yet has the highest number of people killed by guns as well. Please sign this petition to tell Idaho’s governor that bringing guns onto college campuses is a bad idea.
Dear Governor C.L. “Butch” Otter,
A bill is moving forward in Idaho that would allow students to bring firearms onto their university and college campuses. Your new law will be threatening the lives of professors, campus officials, and students that don’t carry guns. Allowing students to carry guns on campus does not mean that they will be safer. What will improve the safety of campuses is to have a good team of security personnel and better campus locks and alarms. Guns are meant to be handled by professionals, such as campus police and security guards. These people are highly trained to protect people, therefore they are confident when carrying their firearms. Students keeping their guns in their backpacks will just cause more fatal accidents and school shootings.
Please reconsider this new bill and think about the students who can be greatly affected by the passing of it. Having more guns on campus does not create a safer environment for students.
