Stop Inhumane and Dangerous Chicken Slaughter

Goal: Ensure that chickens receive humane treatment during production

A new rule that will cause chickens raised for meat more strife than is necessary is being considered. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) is considering a rule that will allow for an increase in the speed of chicken-processing lines by twenty-five percent. This will put stress on all aspects of the operation and not yield any foreseen positive results. The speed of factory farm chicken operations must not increase, for the betterment of workers and chickens.

The main objective of the new rule is to increase production by 175 birds per minute, while eliminating many people inspecting the birds along the line. Increasing the line movement is a bad idea for many reasons: there will be a higher chance of diseases due to negligence, such as the deadly salmonella virus; there will be an increase in birds that survive the initial killing, thus getting boiled alive in the post-kill boiler bath; the inhumane treatment of birds moving down the line will only get worse, as there is literally no time for workers to ensure all birds are secure in the line, and not still alive when they are supposed to be dead.

This new rule must not be allowed to flourish. If chicken producers were given the advantage of speeding up production, more chickens would suffer and workers will be put under unnecessary stress. The USDA is scheduled to make its decision on this ruling soon; sign this petition to urge the USDA to not speed up production and consider the welfare of workers and chickens over profit.


Dear Tom Vilsack,

Your organization, the USDA, will soon decide on whether or not to speed up chicken production lines. I am writing to urge that the USDA does not rule in favor of speeding up production lines, and instead considers the well-being of workers and chickens at the factories.

If the rule were to pass to allow factories to speed up production by 175 birds per minute, the outcome would be dire. Workers would be under an undue amount of stress; more birds would escape death on the line, only to be boiled alive. On average, 825,000 chickens die annually from the scalding water they are dipped in, rather than on the line as they are meant to. If production were to increase, so would this number; the likelihood of a disease outbreak would also increase due to less workers on the line and more filth from higher amounts of birds.

Mr. Vilsack, I urge you to advocate for a safer work environment and more humane treatment of chickens. This ruling will go against safety and humane treatment. We all need to come together to discover solutions to the world’s problems by advocating health and well-being, not profit and abuse. Please step onto the right side of history and ensure this ruling does not happen.

    The very thought itself is sickening: Speeding up production by more than 175 chickens per minute! If people would stop buying Kentucky Fried Chicken, they could actually lower production which would entail a more humane death, as in not slowly burning to death but being killed instantaneously.
