Target: Colorado House Representative Steve Humphrey
Goal: Don’t ban abortions and send doctors who provide them to prison
Colorado legislators are considering a bill that would effectively place a ban on all abortions in the state. Sponsored by House Republican Steve Humphrey, the bill only magnifies how out of touch anti-choice supporters are with women. Despite failed efforts in the past to completely ban abortions in Colorado, Humphrey and other supporters of the bill continue to believe restricting women’s reproductive rights is the best place to channel their efforts.
The bill not only forbids abortions, it makes a violation of the law a class three felony, potentially sending doctors who administer an abortion to prison for up to 12 years and with a $750,000 dollar fine. The bill also forbids prescribing medication that would terminate the life of a human being, where life is defined as beginning at fertilization. Under these conditions there is potential for emergency contraception prescribed by a doctor to also be banned, as many abortion opponents feel that the morning-after pill terminates a pregnancy.
Bills like Humphrey’s are blatant attacks on women’s reproductive rights, and they reflect how out of touch anti-choice politicians are with women. Tell Humphrey that his bill is a waste of effort and energy, and he should not be spending his time trying to police women’s bodies.
Dear Representative Steve Humphrey,
Your bill, House Bill 14-1133, is yet another feeble attempt at trying to curb the reproductive rights of women. Despite the small support you’ve garnered, a majority of people will not support your measure to end abortion in Colorado.
I am writing to tell you that your place as a politician is not in making decisions for women about their own bodies. A woman’s decision to have an abortion should be a private one between her and her doctor. Your efforts are better spent on issues that directly affect your citizens, not on trying to police women’s bodies.
