Target: Minnesota Representative Betty McCollum
Goal: Pass a bill that would end the testing of cosmetics on animals
A bill was recently introduced that would prohibit animal testing for all cosmetics manufactured or sold in the United States. This progressive legislation will end suffering for millions of lab animals and give peace of mind to the many American citizens who strive to avoid products derived from cruelty. The bill is vital and it needs as much support as possible. Urge Minnesota Congresswoman Betty McCollum to co-sponsor the legislation.
The Humane Cosmetics Act was introduced by U.S. Representative Jim Moran (D-VA) to tackle the problem of unnecessary animal testing for cosmetic products. The bill aims to phase out and eventually prohibit this practice altogether by replacing it with alternative forms of non-animal testing. The transition would occur over a period of three or more years in order to provide manufacturers the opportunity to develop new humane forms of testing. The European Union enacted similar legislation and successfully incorporated such cruelty-free testing methods into their cosmetic production. These new methods have proven to be faster, cheaper, and more accurate predictors of human reactions.
The legislation comes at a pivotal time, as the United States does not currently prohibit any forms of animal testing. It is even permissible to resort to animal testing when humane forms are readily available. It is time to protect our animals from abuse at the hands of cosmetics companies.
In addition to its cruel nature, most Americans condemn animal testing, and so the more public and political support this issue receives, the closer our nation becomes to ending unethical and needless cruelty to animals. Urge Minnesota Representative Betty McCollum to co-sponsor the Humane Cosmetics Act and voice her support for the humane treatment of animals.
Dear Minnesota Representative Betty McCollum,
The recently introduced Humane Cosmetics Act has the power to end unnecessary animal testing for cosmetics in the United States. Such legislation is much needed today because alternative forms of testing are readily available, but sadly are not used as frequently. Non-animal testing forms are actually faster, cheaper, more accurate predictors of human reactions, and so there is no reason to allow the exploitation of animals to continue.
I urge you to co-sponsor this bill because our animals are important to us and they deserve better. The majority of Americans support the humane treatment of these sentient beings, and exploiting them for unnecessary purposes is not only cruel, but pointless. We need your voice. Please stand with us by supporting and co-sponsoring the Humane Cosmetics Act.
