Goal: Refuse to sell genetically engineered (GE) salmon in all Costco stores
Genetically engineered (GE) salmon have been catching the media’s attention, as the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has yet to come to a decision on whether or not to approve this type of fish for sale in the US. These salmon have been genetically modified to be sterile females and to grow twice as fast as the average natural salmon; they would be raised in Panama’s mountains so as to prevent mating with normal salmon. However, as many critics have pointed out, there is no way of guaranteeing that all the salmon will be sterile and prevented from cross-breeding or competing for the food supply of normal salmon. Furthermore, there is no way to account for natural disasters that may expose normal salmon to genetically modified DNA.
The FDA appears not to see the environmental dangers of breeding genetically modified salmon, and has decided the fish are safe for human consumption. However, the agency has put off the official decision, some think because they understand consumers’ doubt about the GE fish. Recently, many of the United States’s largest food retailers have decided to reject GE salmon, including Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, Target, Kroger, and Safeway. Costco Wholesale Corporation is the fourth largest retailer in the US and the third largest retailer in the world, and it should follow the lead of its fellow food giants in responding to the desires of consumers who want to know that their salmon is not genetically modified.
By signing this petition, you are encouraging Costco to follow in the footsteps of Kroger, Safeway, and other chains that have embraced consumer concerns about issues of food safety and environmental responsibility that surround the production of genetically modified organisms. You are urging Costco to take a stand and set an example for the remaining retailers who have yet to take action.
Dear Director Galanti,
As you may know, the FDA has not made a decision to approve or disapprove genetically engineered (GE) salmon, but despite their leaning toward an approval, many consumers are not satisfied with the FDA’s decision that GE salmon is safe to eat. This consumer uncertainty, along with potential long-term environmental and health effects, is evidence enough for large food retailers to reject GE salmon and other genetically modified organisms.
I urge you to refuse to sell GE salmon in all Costco stores. I encourage you to follow the example of other huge retailers like Safeway, Kroger, and Trader Joe’s, and to set an example for other retailers in listening to the desires of your consumers and rejecting GE foods.
