Target: National Union of Students
Goal: Stop domestic violence on college university campuses
Victims of domestic abuse often don’t have the courage to seek help because they fear that no one will believe. When acts of domestic violence occur on university campuses, victims find it especially hard to tell the people in their college community what happened to them. Their fears about what their peers would think causes them to bite their tongues and hold back the truth. Very few people realize the prominence of domestic abuse in university life; it is more common than most people think. This issue must be addressed before it can be stopped.
A 2010 national survey revealed that one in seven female university students had experienced physical or sexual assault during their attendance at a college university. Yet, many people continue to deny the issue of domestic violence in university life. This may be due to the preconceived idea of domestic violence; people don’t recognize that domestic violence also occurs within student relationships.
The very first step in solving this issue recognize and make public the problems of domestic violence on university campuses. This will break down the social stigma and misogynistic attitudes of domestic violence in student relationships making it easier for female students to reach out for support. Social attitudes must change in order to defeat this problem and decrease the statistics on domestic violence in university life. Sign this petition and halt the domestic violence in college university campuses.
Dear National Union of Students,
It has come to my attention that the prominence of domestic violence on university campuses is a growing issue. I believe that the social stigma and misogynistic attitudes towards domestic violence has made it harder for the victims of this violence to reach out for support and confide in their peers. Their fears about what people may think about them cause them to bite their tongues and hold back the truth of what happened to them.
I believe that the first step in solving the problem of domestic violence is to remove the social stigma and publicize the issue. We must show people that unlike their preconceived ideas, domestic violence also occurs within student relationships.
