Support Groundbreaking Orca Legislation

Support Groundbreaking Orca Legislation

Target: Assemblyman Richard Bloom

Goal: Support a bill ending performances, breeding programs, and the import and export of orca whales

A landmark bill has been proposed that would give orcas multiple new rights and freedom in California. The legislation, proposed by California state legislator Richard Bloom, would put an end to SeaWorld’s controversial orca performances, as well an end to captive breeding programs, the import and export of genetic material, and the import and export of orcas in the state of California.

The documentary ‘Blackfish’ shed light on the surreptitious practices of SeaWorld — namely, the cruel captivity of the orcas, and the inherent danger to humans who train with the animals. The program concluded that captivity and the wrenching of orcas from their ‘pods’ has lasting effects on their mental health, rendering them dangerous and unpredictable. SeaWorld’s profit-seeking mentality has led to several incidents of orca attacks on their trainers: one such incident resulted in the death of Dawn Brancheau, a veteran SeaWorld trainer, during an orca performance in front of a horrified audience.

This new legislation is a vital opportunity to provide killer whales with the conditions they deserve, and will end the risk to human life exacerbated by harsh training and close contact. One day, we would like to see these beautiful animals only in the wild, but this bill presents an excellent opportunity to make that step towards their freedom. Sign this petition to support Assemblyman Bloom in his efforts to protect orca whales.

Dear Assemblyman Bloom,

Your proposed bill to end cruel practices to orcas in California is courageous and uplifting, and I write to you in full support of your efforts.

The documentary ‘Blackfish’ showed the true nature of SeaWorld’s lucrative business, and the cruelty that captive killer whales are made to suffer. From their torturous capture and separation from their families, to the terrible conditions they are forced to exist in, the inhumane treatment that these incredible animals suffer is too hard to bear.

We need to see a change to the awful practices of SeaWorld to ensure that these animals – that belong in the wild – are properly cared for.

May this petition support you in your undertaking to bring justice for these animals, and may those who sign it be heard as one voice for the ending of cruelty to animals, still suffering at the mercy of humans.
