Success: More Realistic Barbie in Production

3-8-14 Success, a more realistic barbie in production

Target: Artist Nickolay Lamm

Goal: Thank Nickolay Lamm for creating and producing a more realistic doll that emphasizes average as beautiful

A recent ForceChange petition highlighted Nickolay Lamm’s creation of a doll that actually mirrors the national average size of the female teen. It was just announced his doll will soon be put into production due to the attention and support Lamm received. Congratulate Lamm for his doll that emphasizes average as beautiful, as well as the thousands of supporters who are responsible for helping put this doll into production.

As it stands, the current popular Barbie doll is an incredibly inaccurate representation of the female body. If the doll were a life-size woman, her 16-inch waist could only contain half of a liver and a mere few inches of intestine. Her neck is 6 inches thinner and twice as long as that of the average American woman. She could not lift anything even slightly heavy and she would have to crawl around on all fours as her ankles and feet could not support her. This is the standard we have been selling to children for years: an impossibly thin and polished image of what it means to be a “beautiful woman.”

Enter Lamm’s doll onto the toy scene. Referencing the Center for Disease Control’s statistics, Lamm recently created a doll that is proportionate to America’s average 19-year-old female. ForceChange published a petition drawing attention to his doll and Lamm stated he also received a rush of requests as to where people could buy his doll. Lamm decided to start a fundraiser to begin nationally producing these dolls once he reached $100,000 to cover costs. At the time of this petition, he has already received over $334,000 from nearly 10,000 people.

Lamm’s project, “Average is Beautiful,” is a message that struck deep with the public. The traditional Barbie doll has long held the spotlight, emphasizing that beauty meant miniscule waists, too-thin thighs, and a body so disproportionate that she couldn’t even walk if she were life size. Now, people have rallied around the new doll. She reflects a healthy, national average in America and shows young children that beauty is found in everyday life. Thank Lamm and congratulate the people who have supported this vision.

Dear Mr. Lamm,

I want to congratulate you on the successful start to producing your doll. As I know you’re aware, the popular Barbie doll has long held the spotlight as a child’s favorite. However, Barbie does not provide any sort of realistic standard that children should come to expect for themselves or others. Your doll reflects the national average size of a 19-year-old American female, truly showing how average is beautiful.

Thank you for creating this doll and for pursuing national production. Children deserve to be show that beauty is reflected in real, everyday life.
