Target: Ban Ki-moon, Secretary General of the United Nations
Goal: Deploy UN peacekeeping forces to protect Muslims in the Central African Republic from ethnic cleansing
Not long ago, the town of Yaloké boasted a vibrant Muslim community nearly 10,000 strong. Now, not a single Muslim remains–ethnic cleansing has driven Muslims from their homes all over the Central African Republic. Sign the petition and call for the United Nations to step in and dispatch peacekeeping forces to the troubled region.
The atrocities being visited upon Muslims in the Central African Republic are widespread and brutal. Entire communities have been deserted, their residents either massacred or forced to flee for their lives. In other towns, such as Boda, Muslims have essentially been ghettoized, and Human Rights Watch has found that the confined residents are starving to death.
The sudden rash of anti-Muslim attacks has been perpetrated by the so-called anti-balaka, a coalition of Christian and animist individuals who have joined together to avenge attacks from the Seleka on Christians. The Seleka is a largely Muslim militia group that overthrew the government of the CAR in early 2013. Even so, there is absolutely no justification for the wholesale slaughter of innocent people–of any religious or ethnic background. Sign the petition and demand that the UN come to the aid of Muslims struggling to survive in the CAR.
I am writing to express my deep concern for the situation in the Central African Republic, where entire Muslim communities have been massacred or forced to flee by anti-balaka militias. I urge you to respond immediately by sending UN peacekeeping forces to assist the African Union and French forces already present in the region, condemning the violence in the CAR, and taking any diplomatic measures possible to put an end to the ethnic cleansing there.
Human Rights Watch has called on the United Nations for assistance in a situation that has only become more grim and dire as time goes on. The lack of political stability in the CAR has made it difficult for forces there to maintain a handle on the situation, and thousands of innocent civilians are at risk. Entire communities have been wiped out, and refugees are flooding over the borders to Chad and Cameroon. Evacuation missions have managed to get some Muslims out, but many others, including women, children, the elderly, and sick and handicapped people, have been left behind, making them even more vulnerable than they were before.
African Union and French forces have been doing their best to maintain order and security, but even their best efforts will not be enough to bring stability and security back to the CAR. More security forces are urgently required. I therefore urge you to dispatch peacekeeping forces to the CAR as soon as possible.
