End the Use of Snipers Against Civilians

Target: Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon

Goal: To bring to justice those who are killing innocent men, women and children with snipers in Syria.

The use of snipers against civilians in Syria is growing more and more severe. Human rights groups and journalistic organizations have all reported the widespread use of high-powered rifles against unsuspecting citizens and other unwilling combatants. Of particular concern is a two-block area in the town of Aleppo that has become to be known as “The Corridor of Death.” Regime snipers have set up on three government-controlled buildings and have turned the area into a killing field. The government of President Assad has waged indiscriminate war against innocents for years and continues to operate without impunity. The international community must make it clear to the Syrian regime that continuing to operate in such ways will certainly lead to serious war crimes investigations.

The use of snipers shows just how brutal the government is being towards its own citizens. Snipers know exactly who, what and where they are shooting when they aim down their scope. According to the Aleppo Civilian Medical Council, snipers kill around five to twenty civilians every day. Most will die instantly, though those who do not will likely suffer lifelong injuries such as amputations, loss of sight, or paralysis. The lack of operational ambulances in the city does not help the situation, as the transport of victims to hospitals now takes twice as long.

Doctors operating in the city working with local or international aid organizations report that the snipers have seemingly turned killing into sport. Each day, the pattern of injuries changes, with snipers targeting specific body parts as a sort of twisted game. Doctors will know immediately upon arriving what deadly game the snipers chose that day. The international community must take notice now and do all that it can to save innocent lives. Human rights groups report that since the beginning of the conflict, around eleven thousand children (17 & under) have been killed. This is from an estimated total of around 110,000 civilian deaths. One in four deaths of children in the war have come from small arms fire, including those killed by snipers. Sign this petition to demand international action against Syrian government officials who authorize such ruthless killing.

Dear Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon,

The use of snipers against civilians in the conflict in Syria is unacceptable. The Syrian government must be held responsible for the deaths of innocents. In particular, these merchants of death have hit the city of Aleppo hard. I ask that you do everything in your power to bring those responsible to justice.

Snipers have perched on rooftops and picked off women and children for months, causing thousands of deaths in Aleppo alone. The international community must show Syria that action will be taken against them. By doing so, your organization will be saving thousands of children from paralysis, maiming and death.
