Demand Justice for Slain Honduran Journalist

Target: President Juan Orlando Hernandez

Goal: To obtain a safe resolution to the case of a slain journalist in Honduras

The brother of a slain Honduran journalist is now at risk of facing the same fate. Mario Argenal has been demanding justice for the killing of his brother, Juan Carlos Argenal, in 2013. This has made him the target of intimidation and harassment by local authorities, while the investigation into his brother’s death has not moved forward. Local authorities should protect the life of Mario Argenal as well as work towards an endpoint in the case of his brother’s murder.

Juan Carlos Argenal was killed while investigating corruption in the local government. Since then, his brother Mario has given several interviews to national media, implicating those people his brother was investigating in the murder. In addition, his efforts to gain justice for his brother through the local justice system have gained him enemies as well. Now, the family is concerned once again that one of their own will be killed for attempting to highlight basic injustices. Mr. Argenal has been followed and had men in unlicensed cars park outside his house for hours at a time.

The Honduran government must do all it can to promote human rights in its country. By allowing for continued harassment of members of the Argenal family, the government is showing the international community its contempt for freedom of speech as well as the rule of law. Sign this petition to demand action from the Honduran government on the part of the Argenal family.

Dear President Juan Orlando Hernandez,

The slaying of journalist Juan Carlos Argenal was a travesty. Now, the harassment of his brother by local authorities is threatening to claim another member of the Argenal family. Your government must do all it can to satisfy the Argenal’s desire for justice as well as protecting the members of the family that are most vocal about their need for closure.

By providing safety for the family of the slain journalist, your government can show international human rights watchdogs that your country is doing all it can to promote basic human rights. Not doing so will certainly violate international treaties that you are a party to. I urge you to do all you can to peacefully and fairly bring this case to a close.
