Target: President Goodluck Jonathan
Goal: Condemn violence against homosexuals in Nigeria
Recently, four young men were convicted of homosexuality in Nigeria and were publicly whipped for their “crimes.” The nation’s laws severely punish those who are homosexual or who associate with homosexuality. In a nation where homosexuality is considered an evil imported from the West, these sentences are widely accepted. These actions need to be immediately condemned as they are cruel, barbaric, and violate human rights.
The four young men arrested are victims of a wave of anti-gay arrests in Nigeria. Strengthened penalties against homosexuality are a result of the Same Sex Marriage Prohibition, which was passed in January. If the men do not pay their fines, it is very likely that they will continue to suffer at the hands of authorities in prison. If the men cannot pay, they each will suffer 15 strokes of the whip and a year’s imprisonment. Already human rights organizations are trying to come up with the money. The “confessions” given by the four men should not be considered legitimate, as they were given under duress while the accused were being beaten.
In Nigeria, those who are convicted of homosexuality can be whipped, sent to prison, or sentenced to death either by stoning or lethal injection. The most extreme potential sentences have so far not been enforced, but the atmosphere against homosexuals has lead to widespread attacks and discrimination.
Sign this petition to condemn such hateful violence. The government should not be invading the privacy of individuals or families, and certainly shouldn’t be whipping or hurting citizens based on their sexual orientation. Sign this petition and let your voice be heard.
Dear President Goodluck Jonathan,
Recently, four young men were arrested by Nigerian authorities because they are accused of having gay sex. Already their sentences are flawed; their confessions were obtained under duress by law agents who beat them. Furthermore, it is inhumane and cruel to punish someone because of their sexual orientation.
I am writing to condemn these hateful punishments. I cannot believe your nation believes that homosexuality is an evil that is imported from the West, and that such violence is actually tolerated.
