Target: President Vladimir Putin
Goal: Launch a transparent investigation into the attacks on former Pussy Riot members
Recently two women from the punk bank known as Pussy Riot were attacked by men at a McDonald’s. Former members Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Maria Alyokhina have been the subject of insults, attacks, and controversy for expressing their political dissent. While they are often hailed as peaceful activists in the West, many Russians are appalled and angered by their actions. Attacks on peaceful activists need to stop; demand the Russian president open a transparent investigation into this premeditated attack.
Tolokonnikova and Alyokhina were on their way to a penal colony in Russia when both women were attacked by men who threw rubbish and green paint. One of the attackers filmed the incident and has posted it online. The video shows the men spraying the women with green paint from syringes, shouting for them to “go to America!” Tolokonnikova is heard shouting, “It hurts! Why are you doing this? You don’t have the right to hurt me. Please don’t do that to anyone.” Alyokhina suffered head injuries and Tolokonnikova came out with chemical burns.
Pussy Riot is a punk rock band known for their controversial lyrics and performances. All of the singers wear masks to hide their identity, but a performance criticizing Putin at a Russian Orthodox church sent these two women to prison for two years. They were released sometime before the Sochi Olympics where they again criticized the president. Since their incarceration, both women have promised to fight for the rights of prisoners.
Both of these women are peacefully protesting their views, and the public is reacting harshly. Attacks like these should be investigated and those responsible should be prosecuted to the highest extent of the law. Sign this petition and urge the president to put these men behind bars.
Dear President Vladimir Putin,
A recent attack on former Pussy Riot members Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Maria Alyokhina should be thoroughly investigated by authorities, and should be done fairly and transparently. Both women believe the local police were the ones involved in the attack, but authorities say they are investigating the case. However their statements on the matter, along with these accusations that the police might be involved, have convinced me that a third unbiased party should be the judge in this case.
These women are peaceful activists who have been attacked for no reason. Those responsible should be sent to jail for harming innocent people and posting such attacks on the internet.
