Halt the Cruel Greyhound Racing Industry

Target: Florida Governor Rick Scott

Goal: Halt the cruel business of greyhound racing in Florida

In the greyhound racing business, all racing dogs come from breeding farms. They are either chosen to run a race for human entertainment, or are deemed unfit and killed or sent to laboratories to be subjects of experiments. The greyhound racing industry not only kills thousands of greyhounds each year, it also causes the state government to lose millions by regulating these senseless races. Yet, the barbaric sport somehow manages to remain a major business.

When they aren’t racing, the greyhounds spend nearly 20 hours each day stacked on top of one another in cages, in warehouse kennels where they are subjected to severe weather temperatures and parasites such as fleas and ticks. As horrible as life in these kennels appears to be, being taken out of the kennels and put on the racing track is something much worse. The greyhounds who are forced to participate in these races run so hard that it puts severe strain on their bodies. Many greyhound deaths are the result of heat stroke and other fatal injuries that occur during the races.

When these dogs set their paws on the racing track, they aren’t just running towards the finish line; they’re running to their deaths. Sign this petition to halt the Florida greyhound racing business.

Dear Governor Scott,

It has come to my attention that the Florida greyhound races are still a major business, despite their cruel outcomes. Many greyhounds who are forced to participate in these races spend their lives in kennels where they are subjected to severe weather temperatures because they do not have the proper heating and air conditioning. Although the conditions in the kennels are well below the ideal, their lives outside the cages are far worse.

These dogs are essentially running until they succumb to the fatal injuries that occur during the races. At the current rate, one hundred dogs will die before the end of this year, unless you put an end to these races. I urge you to halt the operation of greyhound races before hundreds of greyhounds needlessly die.

  1. Let’s be clear. This petition is so biased it isn’t even funny. The dogs live in secure, climate controlled facilities, where they are cared for 24 hours a day by fbi background checked staff. They are fed quality dog food that is of the same standard that pet food is made of. The dogs have ASPCA approved kennels that provide more than ample room to stand, turn and sleep in. Photos have been documented showing that adults are able to climb into these crates with their canine charges. Racing related injuries are less than 1% statistically and are less likely than any professional human maintained sport according NCAA. This sport is highly regulated. Without the professionalism this sport maintains, thousands of greyhound dogs may be subjected to state run shelters and a more certain death. The racing industry advocates for independent adoption of retired athletes that pose no strain on municipal animal services.

And finally, the photo used in this petition is a whippet, running in an unregulated sporting event, owned and run by an animal right’s advocate, Grey2k founder. It is NOT a racing greyhound. Ironic isn’t it?

Would Leslie be good enough to say what role he or she plays in greyhound racing that Leslie is so knowledgeable. A spectator? Greyhound pet owner? Greyhound racing owner? I am not an attorney, but it seems to me that what has been written, if not true, is very libelous and I am surprised the Grey2k founder (quoting Leslie) has not been sued.

      • Rita Ross says:

I wish to clarify my comments. The anti-greyhound comments are libelous, I would think, if not true, and I ask if the Grey2k founder gave consent for the photo of the whippet to be shown in conjunction with this petition.

  2. Catherine Guy says:

Leslie:Give me a break! Does the greyhound industry pay you for splitting hairs an outright lying on its behalf? Remember, you sanctimonious twit–human athletes have a choice, animals don’t. Do you ever take heed of the way greyhounds are treated AFTER they’re no longer profitable to the human low-life scum who breed thousands of dogs in hopes of finding one champion? Are you aware of the hundreds of dogs that break their hocks, because they’re trying so desperately to win?
What a shame that Leslie can spew such crap while remaining anonymous. For shame! As if you have any shame.
