Target: Tim Wombaker, Principal of Rosemary Clarke Middle School and Max Buffi, Principal of Pahrump Valley High School
Goal: Stop the cruel use of donkeys in sport entertainment events
Rosemary Clarke Middle School and Pahrump Valley High School in Nevada will soon host a day of ‘donkey basketball’ – a sport in which donkeys are ridden around the court with full-sized human beings on their backs. These donkeys are not only exhausted from carrying around humans, but are subject to shouting and screaming, as well as being whipped and kicked. These events can also be dangerous to humans, as demonstrated when one school was sued for over $110,000 by a participant who was badly injured.
Event participants do not only include young students, but also teachers, school district administrators, and members of the Nye County Sheriff’s Office, Fire Department, and Juvenile Probation Department.
This method of entertainment is almost barbaric in its content, with the poor animals exposed to not only physical toil and abuse, but mental torture from the excessive noises and environment which they are forced to endure. In addition to basketball, there are several photographs of these type of events showing people playing a ‘tug-of-war’ with the donkeys, pulling the reigns so hard that the donkey’s face is strained.
There are far better ways to provide entertainment. Perhaps these schools should choose events in which all the participants want to take part, and where none are made to suffer for the sake of ‘entertainment.’ Sign this petition and pressure the two schools in Pahrump, Nevada to stop this cruel sport.
Dear Mr. Wombaker and Mr. Buffi,
The insane entertainment that has been scheduled for your schools in the form of ‘donkey basketball’ has captured the vitriolic attention of a wide audience. I am writing to ask that you stop partaking in this cruelty. What may seem like fun to you and your community is, in reality, torture for the donkeys. Imagine having to carry a full-sized adult on your back while being screamed at and kicked – this is not entertainment, it is madness.
There are so many ways to bring a community together, and to provide a wonderful day of entertainment. Consider choosing an event in which everybody wants to take part. Human sporting events are a great idea, and, if you are looking for humor in this (in which case, you are looking in the wrong place), there are a multitude of companies who provide fun entertainment without the expense of any living creature. The rules in place to stop people abusing the donkeys really cannot be fully enforced, not to mention the abuse that takes place simply by these donkeys being ridden into the ground and screamed at for hours.
Reconsider the continuation of this type of entertainment. There are better alternatives that will not cause pain to animals, and will stay the anger of the thousands upon thousands who support this appeal to your schools. Make the humane choice for the community of Pahrump and end this insanity now.
