Support Woman for Sharing Personal Tragedy

Target: Danielle Deaver

Goal: Support woman for sharing her personal tragedy in hopes of preventing the passage of anti-choice legislation

Danielle Deaver, a woman from Nebraska, recently shared the tragedy she experienced as a result of the 20 week abortion ban enacted in her state. In a courageous move, she shared her story in a letter to the West Virginia legislature in the hopes that they will not follow through with the same ban. The legislation has passed in the West Virginia house, and is currently going through committees before it will be voted on in the senate.

Three and a half years ago, Deaver was delighted to learn that she had become pregnant with her second child. Then at 22 weeks, her water broke, leaving her unborn daughter with not enough amniotic fluid to survive. Deaver and her husband made the difficult decision to induce labor so as to cause as little suffering for their daughter and to preserve Deaver’s health. However, as a result of the 20 week abortion ban, her doctor would not operate the procedure under threat of possible jail time. Instead, Deaver was left to wait in agony for 10 days until Elizabeth was born and then watch her die mere minutes later.

No woman should ever have to undergo what Deaver did, and the decision any woman in her position has to make is a private matter. The state should have no place to decide, and the same law that caused Deaver such tragedy should not be passed in West Virginia. Thank Deaver for courageously sharing her story, and for helping to ensure other women do not have to face a similar tragedy.

Dear Mrs. Danielle Deaver,

I recently learned of the story you shared about your experience with the 20 week abortion ban in Nebraska. While I am so sorry to hear about the personal tragedy you went through, I am moved by your courageousness to share it with the public in the hopes of preventing the same thing from happening to another woman.

I am writing to thank you for sharing your story in hopes that the same ban won’t be passed in West Virginia, and to show my support for your decision. The government has no place in the private decisions that women have to make concerning their bodies, and your experience makes that very clear. Thank you again for your courageousness and for standing up for women everywhere.
