Target: Bob Iger, Chairman and CEO of Walt Disney Company
Goal: Applaud Disney’s decision to stop funding the Boy Scouts of America due to policies that discriminate against gay individuals
The Walt Disney Company recently announced that it will no longer provide funds to the Boy Scouts of America beginning in 2015 because the organization bans gay troop leaders who are open about their sexual orientation. Though the group does permit gay scouts to join, their opposition to openly gay leaders is hypocritical and unfair. Applaud Disney’s decision to pull funds from the Boy Scouts of America for as long as the organization discriminates against a these individuals.
Though Disney did not disclose how much money they have donated to the Scouts in the past, their public disapproval of the organization’s prejudiced policies speak volumes. Not only will its actions encourage other donors to pull funding in response, but decreased funding will also urge Boy Scouts to reconsider the impacts of its policies. Discrimination against a minority group has serious repercussions; as long as the organization denies participation to gay individuals, prominent figures and companies will deny them the funding they need to run this intolerant program.
Boy Scouts spokesman, Deron Smith, claimed the organization is “disappointed” in Disney’s decision, and added that it will “impact our ability to serve kids.” Yet perhaps this wake-up call will spur a change. Ideally, Disney’s actions will encourage the Boy Scouts to expand their offer to serve to every individual, regardless of sexual orientation.
Smith also added that “every child deserves the opportunity to be a part of the Scouting experience,” but seems unwilling to apply the same statement to adults who wish to help scouts by providing their time and leadership.
Applaud Disney’s decision to stop funding the Boy Scouts of America, and urge them to continue to deny funds until the organization allows all eligible adults to serve, regardless of their sexual orientation.
Dear Bob Iger, Chairman and CEO of Walt Disney Company,
I would like to express my thanks to the Walt Disney Co. for the decision to cut funding to the Boy Scouts of America beginning in 2015. This action will likely encourage the Boy Scouts to open programs to all individuals, regardless of sexual orientation. Already, it has taken years to convince the group to allow gay scouts to join, and this acceptance should be expanded to those in leadership roles as well.
Thank you for your decision to stop funding the Boy Scouts of American until the organization ends its discriminatory policies.
