Commend First Lady for Anti-Obesity Initiative

Target: Michelle Obama, First Lady of the United States

Goal: Thank Michelle Obama for promoting better nutrition

Our First Lady is playing a crucial role in protecting our nation’s health. Continuing her efforts as one of the country’s most prominent anti-obesity advocates, Michelle Obama is not backing down in the fight against this epidemic. She now confronts major industries with the demand that they improve labeling of food to better reflect its nutritional value. Under her proposed plan, the food industry would have to label products’ sugar, fat, and salt content more clearly. The plan would also involve actions like updating serving sizes, enlarging type fonts, and including information on added sugars. The move would mark the first re-design of nutrition labeling in twenty years.

While the First Lady has received some criticism for backing off from the anti-obesity campaign during election months, she shows no sign of returning to that approach at this point in time. She is now taking on more controversial issues like the marketing of food to children, an issue that many criticized her for avoiding back in 2009, even though this will almost definitely incur opposition from food industry players. Opting to use her public image to her advantage, the First Lady has been collaborating with celebrities such as Will Ferrel and Amy Poehler, making appearances on programs like the “Today” show and “Jimmy Fallon” to generate support for the administration’s nutrition-focused policy efforts.

By signing the petition below, you can applaud Michelle Obama for using her leadership to ensure American citizens receive the accurate nutrition information they deserve.

Dear Mrs. Obama,

I am writing to thank you for your efforts to protect our nation’s health. Expanding on your anti-obesity Let’s Move! campaign, your work to improve nutritional labeling for food products demonstrates key leadership on a historically controversial subject. That we may look to such a strong, capable advocate for better health and wellness is both inspiring and comforting.

I applaud you for confronting challenging topics gracefully and without fear. Given the difficulty that you yourself have reiterated of obtaining accurate nutritional information, you are standing up for our right to know what goes into our food, empowering us to make informed choices about our health. Standing by you on this initiative, I wish you luck in your efforts moving forward, and hope for your continued success in the future.
