Target: Bashar Ja’afari, Permanent Representative to the United Nations
Goal: Ascertain the whereabouts of Siveen Juma Kindi, who has not been heard from in nearly two years
For nearly two years, the family and friends of Siveen Juma Kindi have waited, hoping for news of him. But as the Syrian government’s silence stretches on, the situation grows more and more hopeless. Sign the petition and lend your voice to those already calling for information regarding Siveen Juma Kindi’s whereabouts.
Siveen Juma Kindi was last seen in March 2012 in Qamishly, a city in northern Syria. He spent the morning of March 13th with his wife and then set out to do an errand at the post office, where he worked. He never arrived at the post office, and calls to his cell phone were never answered. According to unofficial reports, he was picked up by military police, probably as a result of his participation in a protest the day before.
Relatives who inquired after Siveen Juma Kindi’s whereabouts were informed that he was not in custody at all–a fact that contradicts reports from “unofficial sources,”. His family has not heard any news of him at all since September 2013.
The fate of Siveen Juma Kindi has been left a mystery for far too long already. Sign the petition and demand that the Syrian government inform Siveen Juma Kindi’s family of his whereabouts; provide him access to basic necessities, legal representation, and medical care; ensure that he is free from torture and ill-treatment; and either charge him with an internationally-recognizable offense or release him immediately.
I am writing to express my grave concern over the fate of Siveen Juma Kindi, who has been missing since March 2012. Despite the Syrian government’s insistence that it has nothing to do with his disappearance, numerous unofficial reports state that Siveen Juma Kindi has been held incommunicado since that time. I demand that Siveen Juma Kindi’s whereabouts be disclosed immediately.
According to unofficial sources, Siveen Juma Kindi was a target for arrest because of his participation in protests. The day before his disappearance, he had been part of a protest “marking the anniversary of the March 2004 unrests in Qamishly”. If this is so, then his freedom of expression has been grossly violated.
Siveen Juma Kindi’s basic human rights have been disregarded and disrespected for far too long already. I demand that his whereabouts be disclosed immediately. Furthermore, I demand that he is given access to legal representation, granted contact with his family, guaranteed safety from torture and ill-treatment, and provided with adequate medical care for as long as he remains in custody. Finally, I demand that he either be immediately charged with an internationally-recognizable criminal offense or let go.
